Matthew 28:8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”
It doesn't require a commentary to see what is going on here.
These women had been at the cross. They had followed the body to the tomb.
These women had been there when the stone was rolled across the entrance sealing the body into the tomb.
These women were the first to return to the tomb. They are the ones who found it empty.
These women weren't afraid of what was going to happen to them. Their concern was the location of the body. They weren't in fear for their own lives. They put Jesus first.
The guards were all in fear for their lives. No one was going to be happy that the stone had been moved away from the front of the tomb while they were at watch. No one was going to be happy when they discovered the missing body. The guards knew they were in trouble.
Suddenly Jesus was right there in front of these women. Now if I were one of these "lowly" women.... I don't know how I would react if Jesus suddenly appeared in front of me. After all.... no one had been telling them all their lives that Jesus has Risen.
They had seen Him healing the sick, feeding the poor, and they had seen Him hung on a cross.
These women were there when His body had been pulled down from the cross.... lifeless....
Now here He is again.... standing in front of them... telling them to do something....
These women worshiped Him and then went to do as they had been instructed.
These are courageous women.
