Jesus Calms the Storm
My Sunday School children loved this story. I love this one too!
OK.... Jesus had finished the Sermon on the Mount, He went to Capernaum. Peter was from there. People began to hear that Jesus was there and that He would heal people. Thousands of people were crushing in on them everywhere they went. People are pleading with Him to take them with Him.
Jesus decided to go out across the Sea of Galilee. They set out in the boat and finally, He gets a chance to sleep. Then a storm comes up. Now, He's on a boat with fishermen. These are men who made their living on the water. They were use to squalls. The Sea is a deep bowl with high semi-tropical land around it. Temperature changes cause some very dangerous storms.
I was trying to get something from YouTube to pop in here but I can't find anything that might really show how bad the waves must have been. I guess most experienced watermen put down the camera when the going gets really rough in a small fishing boat!
So here we are in a storm that is causing experienced watermen to panic, and Jesus is asleep! They went down below and woke Him up! They yell through the wind and the noise of the sea crashing over the bow of the boat. "We're getting swamped! We're going to sink!"
Jesus got up. No doubt He's perturbed about being awoken from the good sleep He was enjoying. "What are your afraid of?" He went up on deck and yelled at the storm and of course it obeyed.
Can't you just imagine it? Jesus standing up on the rocking deck of the boat, waves crashing over the deck strong enough to knock everything and everyone down, wind, crashing water, loud..... very loud... and dangerous.....
Then Jesus yells.... "Shut up and let me get some sleep!" [paraphrasing here] and then it all stops.... peace.... quiet.... calm.... Then Jesus goes back down below and falls back into His rack....
And the men on the boat looked at each other and said "Did you see what I just saw?"
Cool story.... very cool story.... My Lord Jesus is a powerful sailor who tames the sea.... awesome
