Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men

Matthew 8:28 "When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[c] two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.

29 “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”

30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”

32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.

33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region."

The area was known by the nearest town. I guess that's like if someone came in at the pier in Solomons and someone said they went to Southern Maryland.

There have been hundreds of Sermons in my lifetime about these verses.

First of all, the demons called Jesus "Son of God". Then they spoke of His "appointed time". Then the demons begged to be put into a herd of pigs. When Jesus obliged, they ran the pigs into the water and drawned them.

This must have been a terrifying experience for the people in the region. The owners of the pigs went into the town, and when they returned they asked Jesus to leave. According to most of the commentaries I've read, it was because they were afraid of what He might do to them for their sins.

Here's a couple more thoughts that come to mind.

Jesus had just told the wind, rain, and waves to stop.
Now these demons who had been having their way with the men, immediately responded to Jesus.
Pigs were known as unclean to the Jewish people.

Pretty intense scene wouldn't you agree?

It was out of fear of & respect for God - "Even the demons believe that [in God] and shudder" (James 2 v19)
Their appointed time is their coming judgment (Luke 8v31)
They wished to go into the pigs because of what Jesus said about them in (Matthew 12v43)

I think the main reason why the people asked Jesus to leave is because He was bad for their business (pig farmers). After all, He had just wiped out @ 2,000 of them...
