1 Corinthians 11:1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.
7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God.
Oh, my goodness!!! Now Paul's running the hair police!?!?!? OK... here's the link to the commentary. This is from the commentary.
If it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered: Among the Corinthian Christians, there were probably certain “spiritual” women who declared that since Jesus, they did not need to demonstrate with a hairstyle or head covering that they were under anyone’s authority. In essence, Paul says to these women, “If you are going to forsake your head covering, go all the way and shave your head, and identify yourself with the women of the world, in all their shame.”
Because of the angels: A third reason God has established male headship in the church is the presence of angels in corporate worship.
Angels are present at any assembly of Christians for worship and they note any departure from reverent order. Apparently, angels are offended by any violation of propriety.
For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman: Though Paul has recognized the order of creation, and related it to the principle of male headship in the church, he is also careful to remember even so man also comes through woman. There is a critical interdependence that must be recognized, within the framework of male headship in the church and in the home.
PAUL.... Oh man... you have opened a huge can of worms! Back in the 60's I was living in Charlotte, NC. My uncle was a Presbyterian Minister in another town. I attended the Presbyterian Church not far from the house. There was even a path that went from the neighborhood to the church. I didn't wear a hat. As a matter of fact, I don't recall anyone wearing a hat.
My mom, however, had a collection of small hats. They were either pill box type hats or they were pin in. My mom wore them all the time to church. I never wore a hat. By the time I was old enough, the hat decision had already been made. Men's hats took up too much room in the pews. Women's hats took up too much of the view [for the people seated behind them]. So, hats had their day.... but it was over by the time I turned twelve.
PAUL says there is a natural order to things. God is the head, Jesus is next, then man, then angels. There's just one hiccup in that order.... women.... God made women after He made men. He made Eve from Adam's rib, according to Genesis. So, the order was God, Jesus, Men, Women, then Angels. In Paul's day, women were property. They were not in the hierarchy.
PAUL says gave women permission to enter the "church". In those days women were not permitted to worship in the Jewish Temples. They had to stay outside with the slaves and the livestock.
PAUL gave women permission to be members of the Christian Church, but they had to mind their manners and they had to wear a head covering to display that submission to men.
The first Bible wasn't printed until around 1450. In 1450 men and women wore hats because people would empty their bedpans out the windows above the sidewalks. A hat or a parasol were important. Men were told to remove their hats when they entered a home, out of respect. I'm surprised they didn't have to leave their hats outside!
AND one more little thing here. Adulteresses weren't stoned to death by the time the Bible was printed. They had their heads shaved or they were branded.
PAUL would have loved the mop topped Beatles..... lol.
May I take your hat?
