"TOLEDO, OH -- Mayor Carty Finkbeiner on Friday ordered some 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines from Grand Rapids, Michigan, out of Toledo just before the unit was suppose to start a weekend of urban warfare training downtown.

The mayor’s spokesperson Brian Schwartz said, “the mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people. He did not want them practicing and drilling in a highly visible area."

Permission for this training had already been given. The Mayor was wrong to call this off. I don't see the people having a major "War of the Worlds" experience if everything is handled correctly!. Communication is key!

It feels like it must have been hundreds of years since people were proud of the military and gracious for being protected by those who volunteered. How amazingly quick societal erosion can take place.

Holy Toledo! Watching Marines manuever makes me feel safe! The Army soldiers from Ft. Belvoir use our property in Mclean for PT. It's comforting. What complete dumb arses!

Urban training is something we have done quite routinely. I have done simulated hostage rescue scenarios in NYC and Savannah Georgia. Besides being very important to training, its very cool to land on a street in the Bronx or convention center parking lot in a helicopter. We flew our missions late at night to minimize civilian contact and freaking people out. Its why missions like saving Jessica Lynch work as well as they do. Practice practice practice so when the time comes its automatic. I have been hearing alot about people trying to rid our military from their areas (Berkley Cali) and it pisses me off that people want their freedom but won't support the folks that give them that freedom. Maybe we should change the name from military to Liberator and people will think twice.

I try to explain to people how we trained in Western Europe.. we did EVERYTHING but live fire in downtown german villages and cities..

Imagine waking up tomorrow morning and finding an M1 in your driveway..

Here they'd protest and sue the government. There, they brought us out coffee and pastries in the morning.

Well, I guess if you could get a celebrity to agree to participate in the training exercises - maybe be somebody who is rescued - then it would be worth bringing into people's towns.
