McKays - what's the story

The new mega store in San Souci (Patuxent Crossing) closed and the one in Leonardtown (shopping center) has empty aisles, not to mention some spoiled food in the deli section (condensation in the bag should have been the clue) - turkey and swiss looked and smelled more like bleu cheese

We went to McKay's Leonardtown on Sunday. The shelves were bare (not totally but you know what I mean). The prices were horrible. Barely anyone was there. It's sad. But the salad bar looked good.

A couple of work trucks in front of the Pax Xing site when I went to the PO Box today.
Looked like a couple of the same ones that were there during the remodel.

My wife and I tried the San Souci store when it opened. Prices were high compared to the Wal-Plex and Weis. I believe in supporting local but I'm not going of subsidize them. Tommy McKay is running for Commisioner President again. Maybe he's thinking he'll be too busy.

I don't think it is a money issue. If Tommy needed money he could get his kid to print up some more of those $20s he had a while back. Hey, it work for the gubermint.

Why doesn’t McKay sell the eye sore of a property next to the Tidewater Vet in CH to raise money. The improvements to the CH Flood Lion are gonna put a hurt on his CH location.

Just a thought. But another factor in the lack of customers could be every other store offers store delivery or pick up. Instacart has an agreement with Food Lion, Giant and Aldi for delivery. Not sure about Weiss. Walmart has their own pick up service and I hear they deliver in areas close to the store. I used to always stop by McKay's but I only do if I want their fried chicken, their homemade coleslaw and the salad bar. The last time I went to the one in Hollywood, the deli was closed.

Don't believe they own that land anymore. I think Parlett is the owner. Heard a rumor and only a rumor that Royal Farms maybe interested in building there. Yes the land has become a eyesore and now with Wentworth's moving that piece of land will be the next eyesore in Charlotte Hall. Rather see a Royal Farms there then to see another eyesore. Would love to see a Aldi come to town.

The big earners in the area are probably shopping at Harris Teeter and Giant. Everyone else is probably looking for the cheapest, which means Wally World, Aldi, and Dollar General kinda places. Plus: Location, Location, Location has a lot to do with it.

Wally World's parking lot is always full and I heard that the store was one of the biggest earners in the USA. Shame the customer experience is one of the shittiest in the USA.

I don't welcome the demise of any locally owned business while at the same time corporate behemoths are taking over and sucking millions of dollars out of the local economy every day. Do you think Lowes and Walmart deposit their revenue in the local credit unions?

Of course, we can also thank the jackass Gov. Hogan and his other jackass politician buddies who shut down small businesses while allowing the corporate giants to stay open and take over their business because of some unproven "science" developed by a high school kid for a science project. Yep, look it up. The entire lockdown science was created just this way and was even documented by the sole purveyor of truth, the NYT!!

Food lion in LTown is always packed, all day every day with all lanes open. McKays on the otherhand maybe had one person digging through the meat to find something that hasn't turned completely gray.

I have never been so vigilant about checking expiration dates after I found a tin of anchovies that were over a year past the best buy date at the Leonardtown McKays a few weeks ago. I never even considered looking at best buy dates besides milk in the past because I have an inherent trust in local grocers but I was sketched out by the store's appearance (just happened to be in the area after hitting up Russel Bros. farm). Canned food has huge best buy periods so this must have been sitting around for AGES. (full res)
