Md. Boy, 12, Kills Man Attacking Mother

The 12-year-old boy had finished his homework and was playing a video game when he heard his mother cry out. Rushing to her aid, he found her on the kitchen floor, straddled by a fellow resident of their Prince George's County boarding house, the man's hands wrapped tightly around her neck, the boy said yesterday.

"I kept saying, 'Stop! Stop! Stop!' " the boy said, describing the events of Monday night. "But he just ignored me. He didn't stop. He just kept hurting her."

The boy said he grabbed a knife and swung, slashing 64-year-old Salomon Noubissie across the neck and opening an artery. Noubissie was fatally wounded.

The mother, Cheryl Stamp, said she did not immediately understand what had happened. "What did you do?" she said she asked her son.

"He didn't say anything," she said. "But I knew when I looked in his eyes. I said, 'Oh, Lord.' "

Law enforcement officials were reviewing evidence yesterday and had not decided whether to file charges. Their preliminary account of the incident broadly matches that of the boy and his mother.

The case presents exceedingly unusual circumstances: Rarely is a 12-year-old implicated in a homicide, and even less often does a child that age take a life to protect his mother.

"In Maryland, there can be a legitimate defense of third parties in the event of a violent attack," State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey said. "That is a possibility in this case."

Yesterday, Stamp and her son were secluded in the boarding house on Roosevelt Avenue in the Landover area, curtains closed and doors locked against reporters and neighbors.

Like other neighbors, Turan Queen said she stood by the child. "His reaction was to help his mother," she said. "This was a 12-year-old defending his mother."

Stamp and her son agreed to be interviewed by Washington Post reporters, in part to explain the boy's actions. The Post is not naming the boy because he is a minor.

Unfortuntately it will be a life altering experience for the boy but at the same time, good on him for saving his mother.

Only because of the stupid azz media. If they had common sense and leave them alone, it would all die off quietly. But the media thinks it has the right to invade anyone's privacy in the name of "freedom of the press."

That poor child. I kindly doubt he will ever be the same. He will never forget what he did and will probably end up in therapy for the rest of his life because of it. He will also, no doubt, be overly protective of anyone he loves from here on out. He will never be rid of this. :frown:

I wonder what provoked the kid to stab for the neck? He could've slipped and stabbed the mother. Seems as though justice was served being that the boy hit a major artery. I agree that the boy's life will be forever altered and will be affected for the rest of his life.

There better be some hell raised in Annapolis and Upper Marlboro if Ivey decides to file charges.

Yeah, that bit about whether they would file charges got me too. A lot of things about Maryland $uck, and their self defence stance is one of them.

I think the kid will be ok. He did what he thought was right in protecting his mother. OK, maybe he didn't think the whole thing through, but when you are in that kind of situation, you don't really have the time to ponder the consequences. The boy's objective aim was protecting his mother by what ever means possible, IF that is what his pure intention was. Will it affect him for the rest of his life? Absolutely. But I don't think it will have quite the negative impact that people are supposing. He'll be far more messed up for being charged with a crime than the act itself.

I agree that the experience will be life altering for the 12 y/o. I agree that the media may suck the life blood out of him too. However, what I feel may direct his inner most sense of justice is how the law plays this.

Already, he is given doubt about his action and sense of right and wrong in saving his own mother as "Law enforcement officials were reviewing evidence yesterday and had not decided whether to file charges."

WTF is that all about? How can he possibly know how to define himself about taking a life when the law hasn't even acknowledged his act of (ultimately) self-preservation and doing what it takes to defend his mother's life.

Had it been a stranger in a deli and a knife were handy, would they need to decide to file charges if a 12 y/o acted selflessly and fatally wounded a strangler attempting to rob the place, or something? Perhaps a bad scenario, but you get the picture.

I feel for the child; I really hope this gives him inner strength and courage, not recklessness and a warped outlook on life.

Personally I think he should be hailed as a hero. Someone was trying to kill his mother. He protected her. The person he killed was violent.

Of course someone will think he should have stood in the corner and screamed like a four year old while his mother, which I would bet is the only parent in his life, is killed or raped or whatever the attacker's motive was.

My 12 year old knows the proper use of knives and he knows anatomy. He'd have done the same.
