Ubi bene ibi patria
" COCKEYSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A 15-year-old boy was charged with murder Sunday in the shooting deaths of his parents and two younger brothers in their home in a Baltimore suburb.

Nicholas Waggoner Browning was charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of his father, John Browning, 45; his mother Tamara, 44; and his brothers Gregory, 13, and Benjamin, 11. He was charged as an adult.

Browning was arrested at 1:05 a.m. Sunday after he admitted to the killings, Baltimore County Police spokesman Bill Toohey said.

The teen had not been getting along with his father, police said in a news release. On Friday night, he went into the house after other family members were asleep and shot each of them using his father's handgun, which was in the house, police said. After the slayings, he threw the gun away in bushes near his house, police said."

This is so sad. I went to high school and graduated with his mom. Later news stories say he was an honor student with an exemplary academic record working toward his Eagle Scout. You have to wonder what was so horrible that drove a "good" kid like this to kill one person, let alone his entire family. God rest their souls.

Was she local Southern Maryland? The name sounds so familiar to me, but then again, that means absolutely nothing, I deal with an awful lot of names.

No, she grew up in Northern VA. The reason I knew it was her was the article listed her son's middle name which I remembered was her maiden name. I made the connection then. So tragic.

Drugs, obviously. I don't believe that insanity lies dormant, only to "snap" one day. Either the kid was always criminally insane, which isn't suggested by anyone who was interviewed, or he got involved with drugs which altered his mental paradigm.

I'll go on a brief rant here:

There is a certain type of parent who thinks that drug use in teens is normal and harmless - merely a rite of passage. But drugs and alcohol abuse alter the brain chemistry, and can turn a normal teenager with a lot of potential into a raging addict with erratic and destructive behavior. The most common side-effect of chemical alteration is the tendency toward suicide, but more extreme cases engage in violent crime, including, yes, killing their parents.

There's your PSA for the day. Scoff and ignore it at your own peril.

Look my ass glows!
He kills his family one night and then went to his friends house for a whole day and night without a word??
Because he is under 16 years old, Browning is not eligible for the death penalty.

I agree, there had to be something going on that no one knew about (or ignored). Another friend who knew the mother and I were discussing this yesterday about how science has shown that a 15-year-old brain is undeveloped anyway, which is why teenage boys in particular go through extreme personality changes or do crazy sh*t, whether they're on drugs or not. We also agreed from experience that men's brains never really fully develop, peak around middle age and regress from then on until they die. Very sad don't you think?
