MD Brewry Bill making its way through legislature

Just in time for Guinness to come to Maryland, our glorious legislature wants to make it "fair".

Guinness's proposal for the brewery/tasting room was contingent upon MD developing a liquor license for them (since it's currently up to each county).

This bill (the third similar one), making its way to the MD Senate, if passed would force breweries to close by 9pm on weekdays and 10pm no weekends and forces them to sell beer they brew on site, not anyone else's. I can only imagine where the single bill sponsor got this idea....I imagine stores, bars, retailers, wholesalers, etc. opposed it because if more breweries pop up and are allowed to sell the beer there, it cuts into their business.

Here's a great article talking about the intricacies of this fight so far:

And a copy of HB1283

The infamous MD beer mafia...

huh ?

HB 1283, even in its original form, was nasty. At the time, this blatantly punitive bill only had one single sponsor, in contrast to HB 1420’s 50-plus. The sole purpose of this bill was to roll back the current operating hours, so they wouldn’t compete with bars.

Again, to quote myself because I’m too lazy to paraphrase what’s already written:

Opposing wholesalers and retailers feel threatened by breweries that have a more retail-focused mentality in their taprooms, citing that it would hurt their businesses. Why? Consumers will go to breweries, not bars or stores, to make their purchases. (The Capital)

seems like the distributors and bar owners
