MD Taxes

For the second year in a row, the Maryland Republican Party has compiled a listing of all of the proposed MD tax increases during the 2008 Session.

You can find the "Taxes, Taxes, and More Taxes" report on the MDGOP Web site or by clicking the following link:

I especially like...

the one that requires companies to hand over unused gift card balances to the state. That's pretty rich. I would have to wonder if that is even legal. Of course, now that most companies are no longer charging fees or putting end dates on gift cards, I don't know how they will even determine when a gift card balance is "unused".

14. Tire Tax – HB 338 (Cardin, et al)
a) Imposes a $10 surcharge on each tire sold other than an energy-efficient tire

We don't elect Michael Steele, and this is what we get. I read a blurb on another website that states that "for an extra $12 dollars per set of these tires the consumer can save $150 on their YEARLY gasoline bill."

If gas is going to be as expensive as it is now (and with the trickle down effect being in place) you will never see that $150 savings.

OBTW, I got the quote from Chucky Schumer's website.

 Energy efficient tire? Are these a harder compound, so there's less friction? Wouldn't that reduce traction? Isn't that less safe?

Is it more energy efficient if I crash due to reduced traction? How would spending $12 save me $150 if I have to pay $250 on my deductible when I crash?

I thought the same thing...WTF?

134 pages of WTF:

I could increase my fuel economy by 1%! :yahoo:

I could go from 30 MPG to 30.3 MPG. Think I'll notice that?

Of course, I know that I can do much more than that by modifying my acceleration habits. Of course, if I put on energy saving tires, could that make me think I don't need to modify my habits now?

Sfety consequences are "probably undetectable." How safe does that make you feel?
