As measles cases are surging in Texas, the state’s public health infrastructure is crumbling. Medical communities in rural Texas, where the measles outbreak is centered, are struggling to meet the needs of patients. An aging infrastructure and a dearth of doctors do not bode well for the citizens.
Measles patients requiring hospitalization could find themselves in an isolation room featuring a broken window with a fan duct-taped to it. There is a staggering lack of public health facilities to TEST for measles. Rural West Texas communities and state officials are now scrambling to respond to the fast-growing measles epidemic — 198 confirmed cases. Sixty-four Texas counties don’t even have a hospital, and 25 lack primary care physicians. As with COVID, measles is revealing how a lack of public health resources can leave rural communities dangerously vulnerable. Since 2010, 26 hospitals in rural Texas have simply shut down, and those still standing are in a shocking state of disrepair, with few medical providers.
