You know its getting bad when a Medic has to take a patient to the hospital since three Rescue Squads fail to respond and the forth ambulance is responding is in Dentsville.

Since St.Marys has an all volunteer system why don't you volunteer to help? Become part of the solution!

I used to be on the Mechanicsville Rescue Squad years ago. During the weeknight hours (10 pm to 6 am) there were people assigned to run the calls. We had Thursday nights. Fireboard would call us at home and we would head to the firehouse. Maybe they don't do that anymore? This was 30 years ago (good lord!)...

Who said I didn't Volunteer? Yes times are hard people do not volunteer like they use to when I young. Also volunteering does not bring food to the table, you cant always be available especially during work hours.

M-291 has not been "stationed" in Mechanicsville for over a year. It was moved to the primary ALS location in Leonardtown, when M-1 was wrecked 1 1/2 years ago. Once the new vehicles are outfitted and tagged, M-291 will be replaced by a newer unit, and be housed in Mechanicsville.

Thank you for the clarification.

The same thing almost happened to me when I was a Medic in Southern Maryland. Back then..I had no Partners to help drive, so that I could concentrate on being the Medic. I'll tell ya, THAT was a scarey feeling. Sooner, or later..St Mary's, and Calvert Counties will be paid.

If you are a volunteer, ragging on departments for not getting out isn't really good for public relations.
If you're not a volunteer, why even start the thread? You're right, the medic unit took the patient to the hospital. You're also correct that there was no first or second due ambulance responding. I don't endorse or condone it, but what would be the difference from the medic unit taking the patient and the patient driving themselves or a guardian taking them? The level of care on the way and the lights and sirens is about all I can see.

Roman, JMHO, i don't see how Calvert Co. could possibly do that anywhere in the near future without a tremendous tax increase on the Cal. Co. citizens, there is no Federal or State money to assist. I am sure St. Mary's may be in the same boat financially. I think the advantage Cal. Co. has is it's smaller size, where Depts. can back each other up relatively quickly and while all VFD's are always looking for more volounteers, they have a pretty good turn out here.
Remember prefaced by JMHO.

Revenue recovery is the way to go-while I don't endorse it; short of raising taxes for career staffing there are not many options.
There are grants available to assist volunteer FD w/recruitment and retention.
Not much out there for EMS in the way of money.
