Middle school......

...couldn't sleep last night and caught the end of a documentary about middle school aged kids. It was around 11pm, I think on HBO. Did anyone else see this? The part I watched was a meeting between parents and kids caught (as a group) drinking. I was surprised at the way the kids talked to their parents.

Well, I shouldn't say "surprised" I guess.
I see it around, mine at 8 has to be reminded often how to speak to me.
It was odd to see the parents kind of accept it though.
There wasn't much, if any, reprimand for their actions that I saw.
I wasn't sure if that was because it was edited out or it just didn't happen.

It does not happen.

I had to crack my middle-schooler with a switch this weekend for his sh*tty attitude and for mouthing off to his mother. Then he threatened to call the police because "I don't have the right to hit him". I told him I reserve the right to hit anyone who disrespects my wife.

My kids know better then to talk to me with disrespect! If they do they definitely find out whats good for them!

Parents are afraid to reprimand their kids anymore because of child abuse. I just spoke with an officer the other day. There is no law against punishing your child when it is needed. He actually said "no law against corporal punishment" as long as you don't cross the line.

I don't believe in spanking my kids, but I have NEVER hesitated in busting that azz when it was needed. I have 3 very good children and I am told so at restaurants almost every time we go how well behaved they are. It makes me proud and I let them know how proud I am of them. So parents, don't let these kids walk all over you. YOU ARE THE PARENT! :wench:

While I agree the child needed to have his butt spanked for such an offense, the officer did say that using a switch is borderline abuse. Please be careful about what you do and or say on a public forum! TYVM :howdy:

I was told by a Spring Ridge parent that unless your kid falls in to the ghetto talk and way of dress then you will be harrassed or even smacked around. My neighbor removed her daughter from the school because she went from being a sweet kid to a hood rat in one semester there.

My other friends child acts like a total heathen and is "dating" at the age of 11:yikes: She yells at her mom all the time about not having her cell phone charged when he needs minutes and DEMANDS to be taken her her little boyfriends basketball games. JFC!

I don't care if I have to say my kid lives at the Country Store bar, she is NOT going to that school.

This totally blows my mind!!
An older cousin of mine asked me once when my parents let me date, 16/17 yrs old. She then said her own daughter 13 wanted to date and she wasn't sure what to tell her. I told her what our household rules were when I was 13. NO BOYS!! At the age when boys started coming around we had to hang at my house or do things with my parents. It was "explained" to me that if a boy didn't want to spend time with me when my parents were around then he didn't really like me. Well - she allowed her to date and guess what? Yup - she was pregnant by 17. Not just one daughter but both of her daughters.

I've made it clear to my daughter that she will not date until high school and I will be very involved. Come hell or high water, this kid will graduate from school and not breast feed while doing it! Being a single parent is tough enough and I will not make it harder on myself by becoming a grandma before I'm 40.

It just dawned on me that every time I drop off or pick up my daughter from her BFF's house, her folks are drinking alcohol. And the father seemed quite relaxed when he told me how he found pot in his oldest son's bed room:yikes: I've only know this family for 6 months. The kids also has a baby on the way at 16.

Then today, I find out that her other friend, whom she has known for years at two different schools is the sister of the kids who tried to put a hit on his parents:jameo:: faint: Their kids tell my kid that the parents beat them.

WTF!?!?!?!

It goes to show that people with big houses and money aren't any better than plain white trash like me. I may be a lot of things but I'm mortified at what I've recently discovered.UFB!

As a parent with a child at Spring Ridge, I think the school is much better than you are trying to portray. To be honest, I am getting real tired of all the public slams that take place on here about Spring Ridge (and Great Mills). Instead of complaining, get involved and do something. Oh yea, I bet you took the easy way out, you moved away instead of doing something.

I will not deny the issues of the past at that school. I will not deny there are still issues at that school. BUT, I have been told about other issues at the other HIGH and MIGHTY middle schools in the county. So while it is apparent you have a preconceived notion about Spring Ridge, which is your right, do not lose the fact that those issues you mention start at the home. Those issues also occur at other middle schools nationwide not only in this county. If your issue with those schools are race, then say it is.

When I read your post, I thought the parents need to get a grip on life and quit letting the kids run the house.

If my child came home and told me about harassment, I would be at the school the next day. If my child came into my home and begin "ghetto" talk, it would end that night. If my child demanded phone charging and minutes, the phone would be taken to the county dump.

If my child at the age of 13 wants to date, my answer is simple...NO!

Middle school is a very unique time in everyone's life. The hormones are flying a hundred miles an hour. This is the time to guide the youth down the right path. Not when they are 18, not when they are already in jail, etc.

I believe the intent of the post was the things and experiments the middle age kids get into.....uhmm, seems to be they are acting just like we did, until our parent/s brought us back in line.

We were in the back yard trying to coax a TINY bit of work out of him and the only things available were the switch or the rubber hose. Honestly - I don't think a smack on the azz from my hand is going to do much to put a 5'10", 160lb kid back into line. What should I do next time - maybe smack his face? I don't know exactly where the "Line" we can't cross is these days. God knows switches have worked on the farm for hundreds of years....

I moved, but it was hardly easy and I did it because my neighborhood sucked and so did my landlord:yay:

I'm not trying to portray anything about the school. I'm relaying what I heard and what I see from the kids that go there. Your kids may well be the good, studious children you think they are but are you they silent minority? I've also been told that if you want to slide by there and get good grades, you should keep your head down and your nose to the grindstone because you will be singled out and scorned by the other students. Getting involved is not an option because my daughter is only in the 5th grade. My statement about not letting her attend that school is my way of stating I will not let that crap become a problem. If the school has a problem, I'll avoid it and if that's taking the easy road then who cares. I have enough crap to deal with and don't need 200 students with crappy upbringing to make waves for my kids.:yay: Additionally, I don't raise my kids to fight, but I'm not so nice and if one punk teeny-bopper raises a hand to my child, they better have one mean Mom to back them up.

My former brother-in-law thought he was going to take on the old man when he was about 16 or 17. His dad punched him right in the mouth - just flat laid him out.

Anyway, that was the end of that but if you did that in this day and age, you'd be arrested.

Friends of ours had this happen last week. They didn't get past the "chest bumping" stage. I think all boys go through this with their dad's at some point.

I have been dealing with this myself. I would have NEVER talked to my parents the way my 10 year old is talking to me. I am at my wits end and don't know what else to do. She is so good sometimes and other times she reminds me why animals eat their young. :coffee:

The worst part is when I try to discipline her, she threatens to call the cops or run away. What do you do then? I told her to call the cops: Three hots and a cot and away from a mouthy kid...sounds like heaven to me. :lmao:

I agree about the school slamming. I know teachers at Spring Ridge and Great Mills and they love it there. Takes a special person to be a teacher!!

That's because we live in the time out era. If my kids ever have the balls to call the cops on me, they will be getting taken care of by the state :yay:

Did anyone respond? Have you worked things out? I'm having a heck of a time with my 11 year old daughter and need help! Whooping ass is not an option - she outweighs me considerably. Last year she started raising her hand to me so I took ass kicking outta the line-up.
