Young golfers hit the links Oct. 30 for the middle school golf tournament held at White Plains Golf Course. While some students are new to the sport, others are familiar with it. Some are super serious about it; others play for the fun of it.
“I like it,” Peyton Lewis, a Matthew Henson Middle School sixth grader, said. “It’s not like it’s super competitive. When you’re playing soccer or football, when you miss a goal or something, you’re like ‘Oh, no! Game’s over,’ and everybody’s mad at you. With golf I can just come out here and have fun.”
Brooke Russell, a seventh grader at Mattawoman Middle School, joined the golf team because she figured it would get her out of school from time to time. Now she likes it and thinks her game is improving. She also wants more girls to try the sport.
Nkeshi Free, the mother of Benjamin Stoddert Middle School eighth grader and golf team member, Devin King, said her son was introduced to golf through her parents.
“I go to the driving range with my grandfather,” said King, who attended a golf program at White Plains Golf Course over summer break.
Free appreciates that CCPS has programs like golf tournaments for middle schoolers who might not participate in other sports or activities. “It gives kids opportunities and options. It helps them learn what they’re good at and what they like,” she said.
