"American military communities throughout Europe are doing their part to provide clothing and other aid to refugees flooding to the continent in the greatest numbers since the end of World War II.

Hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan continue to pour into Europe, most of them headed to Germany, where they’ve received the biggest welcome.

German officials estimate 1.5 million asylum-seekers will filter into the country by the end of the year, more than seven times the number seen just a year ago.

In Wiesbaden, home to U.S. Army Europe, servicemembers, their spouses and their children are working to supply aid, mainly in the form of clothing, toys and toiletries for refugees in Hesse and neighboring Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Their actions stand in contrast to the official stance of the U.S. Army, which has remained largely silent on the issue, avoiding what has become one of the biggest European crises since the collapse of communism more than 25 years ago.

One group involved in aid efforts is Heidelberg-based HOPE Ministries. The Christian nonprofit, founded and run by former American soldier Joe Lewis, is working with the Wiesbaden Protestant Women of the Chapel. Members of the latter have already donated hundreds of items.

“Teams are there, and volunteers are trying to manage as much as possible,” Lewis said. “It’s like an exodus, and it’s taking place right in our backyards. We can’t just stand by and say it’s just going to work out.” ".....

Americans are very benevolent people, no matter where they live.
