Military Housing PAX River - Need Advice

We will be relocating to PAX River next month. We would like to go ahead and get on the housing list, but I need some advice on the different Military Housing locations. My husband is an E-5 and we have 3 children. I would prefer to live on base, but it looks like the nicer/newer communities are off base. The last time we moved we got stuck in a community with a lot of younger couples and there was a lot of partying and chaos, I would like to avoid that if at all possible. I would like to feel like my children are safe in their own back yards. Any suggestions?

There is a BEAUTIFUL and brand new housing community on base. just went up months ago..they are still bldg. I'm not military, but those houses look like something out of a magazine. I think you would be better off there on base than where the other housing is as far as looking for something more family oriented and safe. you should really check it out. welcome to the area.

Wonder what they're doing with all of that playground equipment at the Shepard's Terrace housing?

I bought a house here when we moved here, but I know about the base housing. The units that are off base are very nice, I have not heard of too many problems with them at all. They have just finished building some very nice places on base and I believe they are allowing families to move into them right now. Lincoln Military Housing has taken over the housing program here and they have been building nice townhomes and tearing down the old base housing to build new. It may not be a bad idea to submit your application for base housing now so you can be put on the list, just in case or if you decide not to live out in town. What you will need to do is get a copy of your orders, your page 2 and go to google and type in DD form 1746 and fill out that application and fax all of that to Leslie at 240-895-0385. You can contact Leslie at 301-342-3847 for any assistance that you may need. I hope that this helps. I am stationed at VX-1 and am a First Class, so if you have any other questions dont be afraid to ask and I may be able to help.

Thank you so much. Do you know the name of the new housing? I have looked on Lincoln Military Housing website, but I'm not sure which one you are talking about. Also, do you know if it they are 4 bedroom houses? We have 5 children (from his previous relationship & our marraige), but only 3 live with us, so we can't have anything smaller than 4 bedrooms. Am I right in thinking they don't have any houses bigger than 4 bedrooms? I don't care for townhouses, but I know that is what you get in military housing, at least while you are still enlisted, how easy was it to buy a house there? We will only be there 3 years, would it be too big of a risk to buy a home? My husband is filling out the forms now to get us on the list, he is just waiting for me to decide which community we want. Also, if he puts it as "temporary" can we change our minds later? I know that was a lot of questions from one stranger to another, I just haven't lived on base housing in 3 1/2 years and can't remember how it all works. Thank you again for all your help!

Start looking for a rental. I got on the list 6 months before we PCS'd now we have been here almost 3 months and are still waiting. Last time I ck'd we were #5. Also you cant break the lease even when they offer you a house. I also have 3 kids..in all 3 schools so to keep them in the same district after we get base housing I rent in Wildewood. The housing is Challenger Estates..School district will be Evergreen, Esperanza and Leornardtown. Since he is an E-5 you can live in this housing area too. The housing behind Target is E-7 and up only...Great Mills school district..You only qualify for a townhouse at his Rank and the housing on base is in Great Mills School district..Good luck!!! If you need any help feel free to PM me. : )

I'm sorry, I am a little confused. Earlier in the thread someone said that Wildewood was the new housing community, is it not? Also I am not real concerned about the school districts because I home school my kids, but thank you for the advice :). So if you didn't have to consider the school districts which housing community would you have chosen? I want a safe neighborhood with space. We have lived in TX in our own home/land for the last 3 years while my husband was deployed, so it is going to be a hard transition back into the military life.

I should probably say that we home school our children, so I won't be concerned about the school district. Also I don't care about it being the "newest" I just need space, and no chaos.

There are a few new areas, thats the confusion. The one he mentioned is indeed in Wildwood, and the other behind Target, both built in the last few years. There is a new one on base, which I'm told is accepting folks, but I dont know of the ranks, its down by the base marina. This image has it centered. The image is a couple years old, you can see where they were tearing down those old units, they are all gone now, new stuff is going up fast.

Google Maps

Since they are building a spiffy new NAVAIR conference center down that way, I suspect this all might be officer housing, but I dont know for sure.

I know how you feel..I stayed in GA while DH was on seaduty in VA..I have never lived in Basehousing..But here it is nice..It is even the same company that built my house in GA..LOL. It is good that you don't care about the school district. I said Challenger Estates only so that will make me wait a little longer. Since your DH is E-5 you can only live on base or Challenger Estates..The housing behind Target is E-7 and up only. I heard about the new housing being built on base but I have not seen it it, only the housing they closed. I'm not sure how roomy the townhomes are but you should qualify for a 4 bedroom. If I was you I would have no problem living on base..It is really a nice base and it is huge! And when your DH sees all of that traffic coming off and going on the base he would probably love living on base. Wildewood is about 5 miles from the base but once you get on base you are driving another 3 miles or so to get to work. Wildewood seems safe enough...I love the walking trails..This is a subdivision that they also included the base housing in. It is huge and you have to drive about 2 miles in before you even get to the base housing. Lots of playgrounds and they have a pool.

Good luck!

from my knowledge dealingwith the housing office recently...

The amount of bedrooms you are eligible for are based off the service member's dependents. so the only way you could get a 4 bedroom is if you have 3 kids. just an fyi.
there are exceptions but that is say if you have two kids and all the three bedrooms are booked up with a 6 month waiting list and there are open 4 bedrooms... but i dont think that is common here at pax.

Thanks, we do have 3 children that live with us, so I know we are eligible for a 4 bedroom, I was wondering if that is as large as the houses go.

Hey, I ran by the new housing that is going up on base and it is called Lovell Cove. Although you can get good information from this forum, I would call Leslie at the number that I provided you with. She is great and can answer your questions better than we can, since that is her job. Of course you know that they base your housing needs off of the # of dependents that are listed on your Husbands page 2. As far as buying a house here, the market is ok and there are a ton of houses on the market, but the way the economy is right now, you are probably better off living in base housing. What command is your husband getting stationed at?
