I've been driving by seeing rezoning notices for a week or so, finally took the time to stop and read the notice today.

They want to plant a Solar Farm. Guess I'll go to the public meeting just to see what's what.

I just don't wanna see all those dead birds dropping out of the sky.

They can probably make it as far as my house and drop here.

My, in case you are not jokig......No dead birds from this one. Thats windmills and the "solar furnace" thing where it's all mirrors that reflect sunlight on common point on raised towers where the concentrated light heats up a fluid which is used to power turbines, and the air near those towers is pretty hot.

That said, I am a bit saddened by this as I pass that every day on my commute and quite often stop in the mornings to enjoy the view of the animals and the mist.

The hearing was Dec 2nd. You might want to read this article:

Here is the actual comprehensive description of the project, a 14Mb PDF file, including all kinds of details and the environmental studies:

This is the specific case page on the MD Public Service Commission website:

This Google Maps street view is the plant in Hughesville, which is basically what they're proposing to build just south of the Hermanville/235 intersection. I imagine this would look identical.

One of the NoVa electric companies has an add where they tout the savings to their customers from these "alternative" sources.
But after seeing the data on wind turbines, I wonder if there is a savings. It's said it takes more energy to produce a wind turbine than it will produce in it's operational life. Haven;t heard much about solar cells (panels) other than the waste products from making the photo voltaic "cells" is toxic.
If i"m not mistaken, the wafers are made from gallium arsenide (GaAs) is a compound of the elements gallium and arsenic.
they are about 20% efficient in generating electrical power.

The hearing was Dec 2nd.
My neighbor got a letter about the hearing, 2 weeks after the hearing.

One thing they do not take into account in touting the benefits, solar panels need to be washed a couple times a year to help maintain peak efficiency. Have never seen any statement about that water usage.

Southern Marylanders complaining about views being spoiled, yall are about 30 years too late.

Why, I enjoy that view, and it will be gone. just like I enjoyed the view at St Marys City before they built the rowing center and banquet thingy. I understand, things change, doesnt mean I don't miss that things that go away in that change.

I was only partially joking. I have panels on my roof, so far I'm liking the $$$ savings. Upkeep is, so far, minimal. No dead birds.

Love it when I see a thick blanket of fog coming off that field, soon as I round that curve headed north....

Don't eat the solar panels and you will be just fine. And 20% is great, it's 20% of the total energy (kinetic) contained in the photons passing through the cell. This is comparable to the percentage of efficiency an engine gets from burning gas.

I’m guessing you are talking dollar savings just off the electric bill. How much are you saving after paying the bill for the panels?

I referring to the harmful waste produced in making the chips. It's not "clean", it just doesn't pollute while it's producing energy, just making a disposal. Wonder what kind of gas it gives off if there is a fire?

To keep up with our county's energy needs, I'd much rather have a few more mildly unsightly solar fields than another Calvert Cliffs or Morgantown Generating Station.

Everything costs energy and uses chemicals to build. Everything has an operational cost and maintenance expenses. Solar at least produces zero byproducts once it's in service.
