Yes, by all means support the local puppy mills and back yard breeders and get yourself a mini dachshund puppy. Don't look at petfinder, don't check out
Dachshund Rescue of#North America, Inc. - Adopt a dog in need and save a life. Make sure you spend at least 500 bucks on a MUTT, chi-ween, doxie beagle or dachsador, because the ones at the shelter don't need your help. They're going to be put to sleep, not KILLED. Buy a puppy off the internet, because breeders always show their real dogs and facilities.
Don't get a senior dog, since they're just going to die anyway.
(I'm hoping that she'll follow the usual pattern of forumites and do exactly opposite of the advice offered. Dachshund rescue is so near and dear to my heart that it just kills me to see think of someone not rescuing, or at least getting one from the pound when there are so many. My last guy, Willard, was an owner turn in due to the owner going off to be a monk. Seriously.
There are so many great dogs out there that need us to help because people have let them down. They buy them without doing the research, can't be bothered to train or exercise them and then dump them when they become inconvenient. Please be prepared for back problems, bad teeth and bossy personalities. If you do go to a breeder, make sure you see the parents and siblings and don't fall for the 'saving them from the breeder and I couldn't leave him there' because they still walk away with your money, and you end up with a sickly dog and huge vet bills. The rescues I'm familiar with charge around 300 bucks for a puppy, and they'll be fixed and vetted. Sure, you have to jump through hoops to get approved, but it's worth it to have the support group for your dog, your new family member. Give them a forever home.)
