It's a topic we seem to not be interested in politically. The only interest it garnered was when trump talked about the crime aspect.
So, you're right as to the effect on wages; it would be great for American workers. So, why don't we?
Here is where the rubber meets the road; we are, incorrectly, enamored with 'growth'. We've structured everything to that false promise, especially Wall Street. The result is that we need building to happen to drive everything else. We need more people to rent apartments, buy houses, buy more stuff and so on. Because we've predicated our entire economy on growth at all costs, to cover building, to cover entitlements, to cover planning and projections, we had to have more people. When I say 'We' we're talking about everyone invested in growth including politicians who pay for most things they promise with the projections of growth and everyone who has those promises at risk.
It's a lot like a welfare mom who gets more money for having more kids. The ones she has will suffer but that is how mom gets paid. If she is incentivized to make due with what she has, the kids will do better but anyone who is invested in her having more kids won't do as well.
We're just perverse.
