John 2:1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

Here's the link to the commentary I read. I would encourage you to read it as well. There's a lot there I didn't post here.
Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding: This is the first of many stories suggesting that Jesus was always welcome among those having a good time. Jesus didn’t spoil the good time, and in the Jewish culture of that day a wedding was the best party of all.
They have no wine: We don’t know exactly why Mary brought this problem to her son Jesus. Perhaps she eagerly anticipated the day Jesus would miraculously demonstrate that He was the Messiah. When people saw that Jesus was the Messiah it would also vindicate Mary, who lived under the shadow of a pregnancy and birth that many people questioned.
My hour has not yet come: “This expression, mine hour, is generally used in John of the time of the Death of Christ. But it is only so used because His death in those passages is the subject naturally underlying the narrative. It is, any fixed or appointed time; -- and therefore here, the appointed time of His self-manifestation by miracles.” (Alford)
Whatever He says to you, do it: The recorded words of Mary are few. However, it is good to pay attention to her words that were recorded because they consistently glorify Jesus, not Mary herself. It is wise for everyone to obey Mary’s direction, whatever He says to you, do it.
Fill the waterpots with water: The servants under the direction of Jesus were in a unique place of blessing for this miracle. Jesus wanted the cooperation of men in this miracle. He could have filled the pots Himself, or just as easily created the liquid in the pots. But He knew that if the servants shared in the work, then they also shared in the blessing.
They filled them up to the brim: The waterpots were filled to the brim — with no room to add any more — because Jesus wasn’t going to add something to the water; He was going to transform it.
This is a pattern for our faith and obedience. “When you are bidden to believe in him, believe in him up to the brim. When you are told to love him, love him up to the brim. When you are commanded to serve him, serve him up to the brim.” (Spurgeon)
Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast: This took faith on behalf of the servants. Imagine how angry the master of the feast would be if they brought him water to taste! Yet in faith, they obeyed the word of Jesus.
The servants who had drawn the water knew: The faithful servants who did their work to the full knew the greatness of the miracle. The master of the feast only knew it was good wine; he didn’t know it was a miracle. This knowledge was a special blessing for the servants.
We are not told exactly how Jesus performed this miracle. We assume that the transformation took place in the waterpots, but it also could have happened in the actual serving of the wine. Yet according to the record, Jesus did not say a word or perform a ceremony; He simply exercised His will and the miracle was done.
You have kept the good wine until now! The master of the feast paid the bridegroom a great and public compliment. Running out of wine would have meant social disgrace; the miracle of Jesus transformed that into a better wedding party than ever.
This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee: This beginning of signs in the Gospel of John (the first of seven) is a miracle of conversion, from the old ways of law, ceremony and purification to the new life of Jesus.
And manifested His glory: According to John 2:1, this miracle happened on the third day. John hints at the idea that Jesus showed His glory on the third day, and that His disciples believed in Him when they saw His glory.

First of all, let me remind myself that we are reading John's Gospel because John was Jesus' best human buddy. John wrote the Gospel, three letters and the Book of Revelation. So, I'm following John from Daniel to Revelation.
We have studied how God created everything and everyone. We have studied how God gave the Law through Moses. We have studied how humans have promised over and over again to follow the rules, but turned sour quickly after each promise. We studied how God let Nebuchadnezzar kill and capture the humans of Judah because they just wouldn't follow the law.
We studied the Book of Daniel. We learned through the visions that the Messiah would have to come, leave, and return to get us out of our sorrows.
I chose the Gospel of John to follow the Book of Daniel, because John was the "human" Jesus liked best. I chose the Gospel of John to follow the Book of Daniel because John seems to know Jesus, the human part, best.
So now we're reading about the first recorded miracle Jesus performed on Earth.
On the third day.... see 3 days... that third day shows up a lot.
After Jesus started to gather disciples, His mom made a demand. She didn't ask Him. She told Him to do it. When He tried to talk His way out of it, she ignored His arguments and assigned some men to do whatever heavy lifting He would require.
Momma birds have to throw their babies out of the nest. Momma Mary had to make Jesus start doing what He would always do best... Miracles.
Momma humans help their babies learn to walk. Momma humans help their babies learn to talk. Momma humans help their children get out into the world.
Momma Mary had to make Jesus get on with the Mission with a miracle. She wouldn't take no for an answer.
Momma Mary had to throw Jesus out of the nest.... that's my take on these verses... and I'm sticking with it.
Momma Mary kicked Jesus out of the nest!
