Moms of girls, let me know...

Having two boys, I never know what to buy girls when invited to b-day parties. Some girls are stereo-typical and like girly things. Others like more "boy" toys. I have asked the mothers to give suggestions and they are forever saying "whatever you pick, they will like". I tend to buy arts and crafts stuff for them. Do you moms of girls cringe when you see Little Susie open those types of presents, thinking of the possible mess that may come about from it? Or do you think it's a good idea? If most say, they cringe, I'll stop buying them. I don't want some mom to curse me under their breath over the present I bought their daughter.

I cringe.. especially when it's all those little beads.. they drive me crazy when they end up all over my house. Anything with crayons/markers are ok with me. One of my girls is a tomboy and the other a princess.. they both love polly pocket stuff.

I don't cringe

Another suggestion for like 5-8 year olds is Polly Pockets, I don't think you can ever go wrong with Polly's.

How old is the girl? Lately all I see at parties are gift cards. My daughter is 10 and loved to open presents but most of them got set aside and forgotten, except for those from her closest friends that knew what she liked.

We just went to a party for a kid turning 8.. she got 1 actual gift and the other 20 gifts were money or gift cards

Oh... I didn't see the 7 years-old part. Withdraw the Hitachi Magic Wand statment.

I think girls that young would prefer getting to unwrap an actual present rather than a gift card. If it's a duplicate gift or whatever, their parent's can take them to the store to exchange it for something, and then it's like a gift twice. When they get to 10-12, gift cards all the way.

The only thing my granddaughter was more excited about as a birthday present than the ipod shuttle my husband and I gave her was a gift card from McDonalds. The toys and clothes she received took a back seat. By the way she turned five.:yahoo:

You can't go wrong with a Sit and Spin. I've had one since I was a kid, although it has had to be replaced several times.

Moms of girls, let me... 10-19-2007 10:12 AM sure if they're spoiled brats

So anyone who has ever been given a gift card is a "spoiled brat?"

Nacho is gonna come in here and suggest you buy a sit n spin, as she is particularly attached to hers.

You know me so well...:huggy:

Seriously though, I've got 3 girls; one is girly girly; one is average, and the other has always been a tomboy. I did find, however, that with my girls, and their friends, sure fire bets for inexpensive gifts that are a hit are:

hair accessories (like stylish headbands) - girls can NEVER have too many ponytails...
crazy socks
colored gloves and hats (for b-days in the winter and christmas gifts)
beach towels (for summer b-days)
lip glosses and nail polish
Now (whatever # they are currently on) CD's.
And of course anything from Bath & Body Works.

What age will the girl be turning?

Oh wait, I see she is in 1st grade. I must admit that I cringe at receiving arts and crafts that have a million little beads or parts in it. I like to give games. There are a ton of games for that age. Guess Who is ALWAYS a big hit. I make sure to include a gift receipt in case they have it already, but we have had good luck so far with games because it pleases both the girly-girl and tomboy.

My daughter turned 8 in April. Her most favorite gift was a kid- oriented scrapbook kit. She absolutley loves it. With the money she received at her b-day, she wanted to go to Michaels and purchase more stuff for the scrapbook. Maybe one of those and add a disposable camera?

Well aren't we creative. I like that idea, too.

She is in my son's 1st grade class, so I will assume 7??? I agree with you on the gift cards. I think alittle thought should be put into a present.

I LIKE THE CRAFTY STUFF - HOWEVER NOT BEADS
My daughter received a "stained glass" kit.
Michael's sells it - it's actually (I'm guessing here) colored glue and dries on plastic, you peel it from the plastic and it will stick to the window.
There's not a huge mess and they're pretty to have.
She loved them, as did I - recv'd at 7.

My daughters friends, who are around the same age, all love gift cards as well. I too worry that people think that we don't put thoughts into the presents, so I have started adding to the gift cards. If it is for a girl, I get a little purse with hair stuff, chap stick, a fun pen and pad of paper, and place the gift card in that. Then put it in a nice/cool gift bag. I think that all girls LOVE make-up type stuff and stationary, so they get a little bit of everything and yet still have a little something to open.

My daughter is abotu to turn 7 and you can never go wrong with a Bratz doll, but her FAVORITE toy is magnetix. She plays with them all the time-she even brings them in the car.
