NEJM source: We report 528 infections diagnosed between April 27 and June 24, 2022, at 43 sites in 16 countries. Overall, 98% of the persons with infection were gay or bisexual men, 75% were White, and 41% had human immunodeficiency virus infection; the median age was 38 years. Transmission was suspected to have occurred through sexual activity in 95% of the persons with infection. In this case series, 95% of the persons presented with a rash (with 64% having <10 lesions), 73% had anogenital lesions, and 41% had mucosal lesions (with 54 having a single genital lesion). Common systemic features preceding the rash included fever (62%), lethargy (41%), myalgia (31%), and headache (27%); lymphadenopathy was also common (reported in 56%). Concomitant sexually transmitted infections were reported in 109 of 377 persons (29%) who were tested. Among the 23 persons with a clear exposure history, the median incubation period was 7 days (range, 3 to 20). Monkeypox virus DNA was detected in 29 of the 32 persons in whom seminal fluid was analyzed. Antiviral treatment was given to 5% of the persons overall, and 70 (13%) were hospitalized; the reasons for hospitalization were pain management, mostly for severe anorectal pain (21 persons); soft-tissue superinfection (18); pharyngitis limiting oral intake (5); eye lesions (2); acute kidney injury (2); myocarditis (2); and infection-control purposes (13). No deaths were reported.
Okay, that’s the news and science. Now let’s talk politics. Many conservative commenters are darkly predicting that New York and San Fransisco are warmups for, or harbingers of a new pandemic lockdown over monkeypox, to facilitate broad mail-in voting rules designed to affect the midterm elections. I do NOT agree with this, I think it is fear-candy, and I’ll explain why.First, my bona fides. I have been carefully studying the official government response to covid for over two years now. I have repeatedly and successfully fought in court with government over covid restrictions and in doing so, had to carefully explain the law and its legal implications to judges. I have advised and consulted with hundred of other attorneys around the country over similar lawsuits. Therefore I am a subject matter expert on government response to covid.
There are two key differences between monkeypox and covid that preclude the pox being an excuse for 2020-style lockdowns. They are also the reason why San Fransisco is letting the Dore Alley fetish event continue during a state of emergency. The first difference is: unlike covid, monkeypox is painful and inconvenient but NOT FATAL.
In other words, there’s literally no reason to panic. Lots of things in life are painful and inconvenient. We don’t shut down the country over them.
The second difference is: unlike covid, monkeypox is NOT airborne and does NOT spread through asymptomatic transmission. In other words, citizens can easily avoid monkeypox by avoiding anonymous group sex, or even if you accept the corporate media’s version, by avoiding close physical contact with symptomatic people.
In other words — and this is very important — the risk of exposure to monkeypox is a CHOICE. So, no matter how dumb they are, the fetish festivals should NOT be locked down. (Well, maybe they SHOULD be locked down, but not for THIS reason). If concupiscent festival-goers want to undertake the risk of a painful and inconvenient infection, well, they are free citizens. They’re allowed to do stupid stuff. You can criticize them for other things, but they know the risks and are making informed choices.
The problem isn’t promiscuous gay people. The problem is government overreach. Overreach that was clearly exemplified in this op-ed by Scott Gottlieb published in the New York Times Saturday:
Gottlieb allows that the CDC produced a monkeypox test “at warp speed.” Sounds great, health agency work at its finest. But he complains that wasn’t enough. Widespread population tests would have made Gottlieb happier. And his most terrifying prescription of all: we need “a federal infrastructure capable of dealing with these emergencies.”
That is exactly what we DON’T need. Monkeypox is NOT an emergency. It doesn’t threaten people’s lives, not on any population-level scale. It might be discomforting and incommodious but it can also be easily avoided. Facilitating risk-free group sex events is not the jurisdiction of the federal government, period, full stop.
This kind of thinking epitomizes nanny-state philosophy; the menacing and reckless notion that “the government” should solve every human problem. Charitably, maybe this is just covid hangover, maybe Gottlieb is still jumpy after what we all went through over the last two years. Uncharitably, one wonders if Gottlieb has some festivals on his calendar that he doesn’t want to miss. Either way, if people like Gottlieb are in charge, he is just illustrating how we got into this mess in the first place.
So what do I think is REALLY going on? Why are New York and San Fran under states of monkeypox emergency? Use Occam’s razor.
The mayors of both cities are under enormous political pressure from the powerful gay lobby to get them some vaccines, stat, so they can continue their hedonistic hobbies without consequence. Apparently, monkeypox vaccines are still hard to come by right now and are being rationed. Gay folks are outraged that mayors aren’t doing more harder and faster to protect them.
But one thing the mayors CAN do to show progress is declare emergencies. It’s easy and just takes one piece of paper. Emergencies also provide lots of ancillary political benefits like no-bid contracts, allowing mayors to shower taxpayer cash on allies and insiders, and to get some sweet federal money coming their way. They learned all the tricks during covid.
Absent large numbers of fatalities and unseen asymptomatic spread, courts are NOT going to have patience for new lockdowns or electoral shenanigans. Not after what we just went through. It will never happen. I’m not saying it CAN’T happen in certain deep blue areas, it probably will. But it won’t be any kind of widespread national phenomenon. Not this bug.
The silver lining is: this is another chance for all of us normal folks to watch how the gay lobby operates and learn. We can use the same political tools and techniques if we organize like the gay lobby did after the HIV experience in the 1980’s. It doesn’t happen overnight, but our team needs to learn how to do it. We used to know, but we’ve forgotten.
So. Do not panic! Don’t believe corporate media’s experts. Push back on the monkeypox narrative, loudly and consistently.
And, for crying out loud, stay away from “festivals.” This time, it is NOT a festivus for the rest of us; it’s a painful ordeal, which nobody wants around.

Monkeypox Mania! California Declares State of Emergency
California Governor Gavin Newsom is of course shrieking as he sounds the alarm. From the gov’s website Monday night:

I have no interest in stigmatizing gay men or anyone else in the LGBTQ community (though I’m pretty sure that monkeypox is not showing up in many lesbians). What I do take issue with, however, is that the powers at be are falsely reporting the story to protect those they consider untouchable. The situation with COVID was remarkably similar: for almost three years now they have been selling us a message that we’re all equally at risk from COVID—but it’s simply not true.
While they’ve stigmatized kids throughout the pandemic as deadly threats to their grandparents and teachers, the truth is that children were at little to no risk from the original Wuhan Flu, but the elderly and obese most certainly were. Just last month, actor Jon Cryer called children “unchecked vectors for a lethal infectious disease.”
The Hill ran a short but surprisingly positive story about Governor DeSantis and the latest emergency yesterday, headlined, “DeSantis Says Monkeypox Concern Overblown: ‘We Are Not Doing Fear’.”The article is capped with a video clip of Dr. Fauci listing reasons why monkeypox outbreak is different from other, more challenging pandemics. America’s Top Covid Doc listed four differences, which were each just as good as the two reasons that I gave you yesterday for why MPX is different from covid:

- (AF) We have diagnostics
- (AF) We have therapy developed years ago
- (JC) Mortality is near-zero
- (JC) Requires physical contact for transmission.

The article then gets to Governor DeSantis who thinks — you’d better sit down — the media and some politicians are unnecessarily fear mongering about MPX. Can you believe that? The Governor is tired of it: “I am so sick of politicians, and we saw this with COVID, trying to sow fear into the population.”
Apparently, citizens terrified by politicians and corporate media articles have been calling Florida’s Department of Health for help. “We had people calling, mothers worried about whether their kids could catch it at school,” DeSantis explained.
Half the time, the Hill referred to DeSantis merely as the “Republican governor” — with a lower-case ‘g’, to avoid using his name. It must be hard for them.
Anyway, DeSantis continued saying that Florida will not be locking down for MPX or anything else: “We are not doing fear,” he promised. “And we are not going to go out and try to rile people up and try to act like people can’t live their lives as they’ve been normally doing because of something.”
DeSantis seemed a wee bit skeptical about the intentions of the states of emergency in California, New York, and Illinois. “You see some of these states declaring states of emergency. They’re going to abuse those emergency powers to restrict your freedom. I guarantee you that’s what will happen,” DeSantis explained.
For “balance,” the Hill quoted clinically-insane failed politician and throwaway gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist, who thinks Governor DeSantis is way off base, because stoking fear is ABSOLUTELY the way to go. “While Governor DeSantis dismisses Monkeypox, at-risk Floridians still need better information, better testing, and access to vaccines for prevention,” Crist tweeted.
Okay, Charlie.
Crist probably wants to lock down all public places where MPX is spread. Oh wait … scratch that. Come to think of it, he probably wants to shut down all public places EXCEPT where MPX is spread. Haha, the responses to Crist’s tweet are universally pretty spicy. I think the public voted against his proposal, essentially suggesting he shove it where the monkeypox grows.
As for C&C, we say: No thanks Charlie! We’re all stocked up on Governors and are satisfied with our current provider. Thanks for stopping by, but we’ve got a Python in the backyard and have to go now.
The Hill’s article was surprisingly positive — okay, maybe it would be more accurate to say it was surprisingly NEUTRAL toward the Governor. It’s not like the Hill praised him or anything. But it didn’t sneak in the usual undermining words like writing “DeSantis claimed” instead of “DeSantis said.”
So add a seventh difference between MPX and covid: you’re allowed to criticize the government’s response to MPX. That may be the most important difference yet.

It is not an emergency for the vast 99.999999999999% of the population, NOT. So why did this idiot, this dolt, this illogical dimwit declare it as such? Why have these losers waited for so long and now even have the GAY community on the ropes due to stigma? Moreover, the COVID injection has subverted the immune systems of GAYs and this is another dimension, they are at risk of infection due to the COVID injections immuno-suppression.
No anal sex, no sex, no skin to skin contact for the GAY and Bisexual community for a short period to get this under control. Is that too much to ask? Why is Becerra and Fauci and Walensky afraid to tell them this? For their own good! To protect the rest of society and themselves.
Bear with me and if you are mad that I am opining on this recent declaration by Biden et al., then do not read my stack. I am not here to please. We can disagree yet still care about each other and support and even love. Need not hate each other if we disagree but we be brave to keep serious difficult discussions ongoing civilly.
I have always said it is not due to being GAY or bisexual but bisexuals are a key problem for they will take this to low risk monogamous women who do not know that he is sexing with both genders. The data remains clear.

When asked if he saw society as a whole shifting in their response to monkeypox, Wiener responded, “Yes, among gay men, we’re seeing a lot of decisions.”
