More dog problems

About six months ago my mom rescued a mini schnauzer that had been abused and he's a biter when he feels threatened. Well he bit my dad last night, now he's insisting the dog be put to sleep. My mother is a mess, her life are her two little schnauzer dogs. I really think she'd prefer my dad be gone than the dogs.

Anyway, any suggestions on if there is anything that can be done with this type of behaviour? Maybe doggie prozac? It will absolutely devastate my mother to have this dog put down. I'd take him, but he fights horribly with my dog. My sister is currently hiding the dog from my dad, so he can't shoot him. I could just throttle my dad, because he knows the dogs issues, and he should've known better than to walk into a dark room and pick the dog up off the bed without calling out the dogs name so the dog knew who was picking him up. My mom puts up with a lot of crap from my dad, and the least he could do is not act like a jackass when it comes to her dogs.

Okay, vent done.

There is doggie prozac. She should talk to the vet about meds and also should talk to somebody about behavior modification techniques. On the other hand, I wouldn't have a biter in the house at all. Had one a long time ago...just a young dog..but my kids were small and I found the dog a good home. Just a risk I didn't want.

I'd muzzle the little PITA and find it new home, especially since it's been in the house for 6 months and still has issues.

I'd love to be able to find the dog a good home, but how many people want a biting dog? I don't mind biting dogs, I mean, it's a schnauzer not a rottweiler. I've been bitten by dogs a zillion times (all small yappy dogs), and I'm of the opinion, BFD. It's their only means of defense when they feel threatened. I just don't think it's right to kill a dog, when human behavior modification can fix the problem.

Discuss the issue with a vet. Also, pet training is an option: Petsmart in Waldorf has trainers on staff - one of them helped us pick out toys and the like for my mother's new puppy - and other Petsmart locations probably do as well, and you can certainly look elsewhere for training advice, too.

What provoked the dog to bite? If a trainer is unable to help you can also call an animal behaviorist

When was the last time a full blood panel was done?

Her dad went into a dark room and proceeded to grab the dog off the bed... if you were sleeping in the dark and someone grabbed you I'm thinking you wouldn't be too happy either...

:yeahthat: was someone on the bed the dog was protecting? mabie a child or his wife??
To me it doesn't matter. Even if the dog was alone, if the dog was sleeping and a man walked into the dark room and grabbed the dog, I don't blame the dog for snapping at him. It is a natural defensive instinct. To me, this is way different than a dog who is amongst people in the home that suddenly decides to lunge at someone. I don't think it's fair to blame the dog in this instance.

:yeahthat: :huggy: :flowers:

Are you in the market for another mini-schnauzer? :really: I can get you one for free. He is a good dog, and has made HUGE progress since my mom first got him. He was scared to death and snapped at everyone when she first got him. He's now much more mellow and trusting, but will still snap if startled. I'm not sure if he'll ever get over that. He was pretty badly abused.

In this instance it is not the dogs fault. If someone tried to pick me up off the bed (good luck-hehe) Id bite them too
