More Monks

I’m off work today and was watching some of the testimony before the Liquor Board regarding Monks Inn. I'm not sure if the broadcast was live or a re-run, but it was entertaining nonetheless.

I’m usually not in favor of residents complaining about local businesses. To me, that’s an “anti-growth” stance and I’m usually in favor of growth. With Monks however, it seems like noise from music is an issue keeping people awake at night. If I was a resident down there, I wouldn’t necessarily care about the violence, the parking, the debauchery, etc., but if they’re blasting music on a weeknight and it keeps me from sleeping, then we’ve got a big problem.

Just for the record, I’ve never been down there so I don’t know firsthand. Based on testimony however, the noise from music seems like an issue.

I walk by Monks morning and evening. I really don't know if you can hear the music in the homes or not, but I can understand the complaints about the parking and trash. There's a large parking lot out back yet people persistently park along the road. They haven't blocked any driveways but come pretty darn close and I would imagine that it's a little disconcerting to see strange cars parked in front of your home. Then there's always the beer can/bottle/cigarette ash tray dump/go cup issue. That would bother me to see that at the end of my driveway. I know Monks can't control what their patrons do outside their business but I would think people would have a little more respect even if they have been drinking. I wouldn't move that close to a bar personally.

I believe it's pointless to expect people who have been drinking to show that kind of respect. People generally act irresponsibly when they're drunk.

I have a relative who lived in an apartment near another bar for a few months. The person moved out because of the constant noise of cars pulling in and out.

From what I've seen, many bars and liquor stores seem to have apartments in the same building. That must be a hassle for the buildings' owners - the rent money might be the only thing preventing the owners from losing their mortgages, yet the tenant turnover must be astronomically high.

I can't remember the last time I was drunk (no pun intended) and I say irresponsible things after one beer, but for some reason wouldn't dream of leaving my trash anywhere other than where it belonged. I think it's just kind of embedded that it's the wrong thing to do.

Monks did have an apartment overhead - not sure if it's being used for that or not anymore.

I'll bet that was Phil Cooper ( ex deputy, ran for Sherrif against Voorhar) complaining about the noise. He's #####ed about Monk's for years and years.

I live on Trapp road, but if I lived right behind Monks like he does I might have an issue too.

There are two apartments over top of Monk's. They are apparently soundproofed from the noise below according to the tenents. The two tenents regularly frequented the bar downstairs so I don't believe they have issues with the noise. Having been a customer myself once or twice a week. I can say that I have never been there when they had those massive crowds. The problem is that the music is what attracts the younger ones who wan't to party and dance all night and that is when the business makes money. Finding the balance in between making money and satisfying the neighbors and keeping everyone safe is the key.

I’m not necessarily in favor of holding the owner of an establishment responsible for the bad behavior of his patrons once they leave his establishment. I’m all about personal responsibility versus pointing blame at someone else. There are cases where folks who have private parties at their houses are held responsible for DUI related incidents caused by guests after they leave their house. I’m certainly opposed to that.

Loud music from inside the establishment is entirely different and completely within the purview of the establishment’s owner. I just don’t know how loud Monk’s is. I guess it’s possible that some of the complaining residents are just NIMBY’s and don’t want to live by a bar under any circumstance.

idiot, if you lived there would you be more worried about getting shot or getting enough sleep? you douche.[/COLOR]

I’m not sure if this anonymous person is in favor of holding the owner responsible or not. He’s not clear in his comment. Nevertheless, if he’s so passionate, then I’m sure he was testifying in front of the Board the other day.

I’ve made it clear that I can’t comment specifically about Monk’s since I’ve never been down there. Anyone who reads my posts would see that I've not formed any clear opinions about that establishment. Doing so without ever having been down there would be irresponsible.

There was a bar there long before he moved in, didn't he realize he was buying a house next door to a bar? Also, if you listened to the entire hearing they were cited for continuously having the police to respond to fights etc. in the parking lot as well as the murder, not for the noise.

Then why is Catamarans still able to serve alcohol? They always have cops deployed there on a regular basis. I used to go all the time. I stopped because the fighting was out of hand.....

I guess Calvert is a little different than St Marys

I think it has to do with being near homes versus not being by homes. Tiki Bar gets complaints - Cats does not. People, live by the Tiki Bar, nobody lives by Cats.
