Moss on the Roof

Was blowing the leaves off the roof and noticed numerous clumps of moss on the shingles. Not big, about the size of a silver dollar. What can I do to destroy the moss....not just knock off the clump, but destroy the growth?

I'd say chop down some trees..

Sprinkle with cheap dry powder generic laundry detergent. Will kill the moss. However, it will most likely be back if the area is not a high sunlight area. You can clean with a powerwasher and seal it though. But again, lack of sunshine just might cause it to reappear.

Place a strip 4 - 5 inches wide, of copper underneath the top course of shingles.. You should see the copper between the shingles..

Everytime it rains the water will drain over the copper and prevent algae and moss from growing on the roof below it.

If you have a neighbor that has a tree overhanging your property and it REALLY annoys you.. a couple of copper nails in a root or two, and no more tree!!

The new shingles they installed on our house have an anti fungal guard along with a stain guard of some sort. There are sprays out there for these issues.

Cleaning roof fungus (black streaks) is a highly specialized process and has to be considered carefully. If all you have is moss, then perhaps the laundry detergent suggested above might be all you need.
