Motherboard Replacement

I currently have a non working HP Desktop with model number A6700y. The motherboard on the unit stopped working. I have tested this as I can not get the system to boot to bios without the hard drive connected.

The motherboard in the system is a MCP61PM-HM Nettle 3 Motherboard. These are not hard to come by, but was wondering about a possible upgrade. Is there a board out there that I could upgrade to while still using the same Processor that was installed on this board?

Here is my concern. I know my way around the inside of a computer, I know how to replace items, but I really don't stay with the current technology. As this system is just over 2.5 years old, I would hope a motherboard would last longer than that, so this is why I would like a different motherboard.

We seldom turn our computer off, as we are constantly streaming the online scanner or other such items. Could someone recommend a good motherboard that would upgrade the system while still using the same processor.

Any help is greatly appreciated in advance. Thank You.

Is the hard drive a Seagate one? What is the model number of the hard drive?
Most likely the motherboard is fine.
Over the past couple of years on some Seagate harddrives, especially the OEM ones intended for HP products, have a bug in the firmware. The bug essentially puts the harddrive into a permanent sleep mode when the read head comes over a certain part of the platter. This also causes the motherboard to appear dead since it can't ID the drive. Usually after a long wait you'll be able to get into the BIOS.

I've resurrected several of the harddrives on HP computers and will have no problem doing it if you're not too far from Lex. Park.

I am actually located over in Lusby. It has a Hitachi Deskstar Hard Drive. This is what started happening.

I opened the computer to replace the DVD drive as it would not read DVD's anymore. After replacing, I was unable to get the computer to boot back up. I removed the new DVD drives, then tried to start the computer. Still did not have any luck. I then noticed that the LED light on the back of the power supply was flashing. I replaced the stock power supply with a F1tality power supply.

With the new power supply in, I was getting the same results. As soon as I turned the computer on, it would shut the power supply down. I then went with process of elimination. I removed all components from the motherboard except what is necessary for the computer to start. I started adding components to find out what the problem was. I had everything added except for the hard drive and dvd drives. As soon as I hooked up the hard drive, it would immediately shut down the power supply.

I then decided to call hp to troubleshoot the system. The tech on the phone told me to leave the hard drive disconnected, boot the computer and immediately press the f10 key multiple times to get the computer to boot to bios. I tried several times getting the system to boot to bios without the hard drive connected. Still after the several attempts nothing would happen.

HP then told me that the motherboard had gone bad in the system since I could not access the bios. I thought that was kind of funny, but by this time I was soo frustrated with this system, I think I would have believed them if they told me to throw it away.

Is the power supply at least the same wattage as the original? How much dust, etc. was in the computer when you opened it? May need a good cleaning with a can of compressed air. Also, remove the CMOS battery for a minute or two then try getting into the BIOS.
