Motion detection lighting

Well I got it installed. The first one blew the detector part after I'd got it all set up and it was pretty good. Not as far reaching as I'd hoped, but ok. I'd smooshed a wire causing it to short. Oh well, back to Lowes and buy the detector part which I'd noticed they carried. What I didn't notice is they cost the same as the whole fixture, so thats what I got.
Put it in and it works great...as long as I can get the would be burglers to stand in front of it and wave their arms. It's supposed to be good to 70'. The first one was maybe 50'. This one 10'.
Has anyone ever got one that works well?
I know I've set some off before, so I know they exist.

I set up some at my old house in Hollywood....if someone walked on the edge of the ditch on the inside of the yard the lights would go on and light up the entire front yard....in the back they had to get near the gate to the back yard and the whole back yard would be lite

The mutts would set the one in the back off in the summer when we had the pool so they could swim till all hours of the night

The one that is at my house now in the front, if you get about half-way in the driveway or step around the corner of the house I think you can see my front yard from space

You probably don't have it set right, yet....so get your butt out there and keep trying

Most of what Lowes carries is junk especially their standard brand (I can't think of the name). There is a sensitivity control that is very touchy. In one position, it won't hardly go on, then a slight touch up and it won't shut off. The motion sensor is very tiny. Remove the plastic lens and see that it really doesn't cover much area, so the way you aim it is critical. I had better luck with their Heath/Zenith brand.

That's the brand that I installed in the house in Hollywood....and I think it's the one that is installed at my new house

Ok, I went and splurged for the best one Lowes had. Got it up and it didn't work any better than the cheap one. I took it back and got a different brand all together. Got this one up and it's good out to maybe 30'. Not great, but I decided that I've wasted enough time on this little project. I read further in the book about how to use it as a regular light etc. and ran across this.
Note: Full sensitivity may not be reached until the light has been on for 48 hours. WTH? Thanks, guys, for having me adjust the light before full sensitivity has been reached. :buttkick:
Not to mention taking back two lights because they weren't sensitive enough.

Mine is too sensitive. It turns on when the trees blow in the wind 30 feet away... Never got around to de-sensitizing it.

Take an empty 35 mm film canister. Poke a hole in the bottom of it with an awl or a scribe, in the center. Glue it over the motion sensing "eye" on the light. Epoxy works best. The reduced amount of light hitting the eye will stop it from going off when the wind blows the tree branches, etc.

Absolutely! Mine do too but there is no way around this because the detector doesn't differentiate between motions whether it is a tree branch or a person moving, so I just live with it.
