Winter WHAT!???

And why spend the money on a rear stand? Can you get a center stand?

What kind of bike? And why put it in storage? You can ride into November, and some in Dec depending on weather. Get a motorcycle jack and use it for your stand along with a battery tender. Then when you need to do maintenance on your bike you have the jack.

Craftsman makes a great bike jack but it is costly. @$150 or so. Pep boys and others make cheaper ones. :howdy:

If I am going to jack my $20K bike up off the floor the last thing I am going to look for is to save $20 on the jack. But that is just me.

:bs: what's bad for your tires is being under inflated. Is the concrete supposed to be the problem like the myth about sitting a battery on a concrete floor?
If you're worried about flat spotting your tires, just roll the bike forward of back a couple of inches and you'll change the part of your tire in contact with the floor.

Spend the $150 and get the Craftsman Jack. :yay: Oh BTW you can go to the Sears store in Prince Frederick and order it there if you don't want to drive up to Waldorf, depending upon where you live of course.

Agreed but he said $135 was too much and that he was looking for a used jack, so I assumed it wasn't a $20,000 Harley like mine is and that money IS a factor. :howdy:

The Sears store in Wildewood usually has one on their floor.

yes a stand is better and he's right about the concrete

hi guys...sak is 100% CORRECT...leaving your tires in prolonged contact with a smooth concrete floor especially during colder weather will in fact increase dry rot and condensation through conduction INSIDE the tires and can also flat spot the tires....even though you may not see a flat spot after you take it out of storage and ride it a little it can cause an imbalance(slight deformation) in the tire ...as for a center stand well that would work but then if you ever sold the bike you have to start all over again cause it only works on THAT particular bike...as for the floor jack it works great on harleys cause they have lower frames (perimeter type below the cases that provide an even and flat surface)...jap bikes for the most part do not ( a few cruisers and tourers do)...so the floor jack will easily let your bike fall over and god forbid it falls on you !!!...the rear stand is BY FAR the most practical and least expensive for it can be used for the next 100 years on any round or box section swingarm made going back to 1962 and up to the new 2008 models...lockhart makes the least expensive at around $89 and that's BRAND NEW in the box...go see steve in parts at Clinton Cycles...he knows his stuff and he races as well so he's used his stands oh at least like a million times a year....he stocks about 4-5 different kinds (was just in there yesterday) and can order you anything else you want...hope this helps

OK, maybe a silly question, but I don't know anything about storing bikes or rear stands.. How does a REAR stand get the front tire off of the ground?

And if you are worried about dry rotting your tires by leaving them on a concrete floor, just sell your bike, you aren't riding it enough to warrant the expense of having one.

ok... front tire solved...read up

itsbob is correct. a rear stand will not elevate the front tire...but you have 3 options to fix that...1) move the bike periodically while on the stand as tinman wrote 2) get a front end stand which once again will something you can use the rest of your life or until they quit making forks for front ends on motorcycles 3) get one of the pit bull stands that has interchangeable heads that allow you to use the stand on the front or the rear and periodically switch it back and forth...yeah he's (itsbob) right as well on the dry rot issue...that being that if the'yr dry rotting then sell the bike...but then wait..i own 7 different bikes and a number of them are part of a collection and 100%...yes 100% of my bikes stay on stands 100% of the time unless being ridden...better for the bike and makes it so muich easier for maintenance and cleaning...lemme know...
