Mr King.

Some of you have read my posts about my granddog, the black cockerspaniel, Mr. King. He turned 16 years old on Valentines Day this year. He's had a cough for a while and it was continually getting worse, my daughter took him to the vets where he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. The doctor prescribed medication for him, which he will be on for the remainder of his life. He has been the one constant in her life for 16 years, she is okay, but, I know when he goes, it will break her heart. Have any of you had a dog diagnosed with this condition? Just wondering how long they lasted, 1 month, 1 year, ? Just to get an idea of when to expect that dreaded phone call. He has been a reasonably healthy pup all his life, my daughter, for as long as she has had him, exercises him daily, regular visits to the vet, healthy food, very little treats. I was also wondering if anyone had heard about certain dog foods being linked to CHF in dogs?

My sister lost her chihuahua who had CHF last month. He started out with that cough and it just kept getting progressively worse. Howdy lasted about a year, was on medication for his condition, and was 13 when he passed. His full sister is now starting that same cough. :frown:

Had a boxer with a bad heart that the vet (heart specialist at DogsNCats in Bowie) said he wouldn't live past 4 or 5..He was on meds his whole life and lived to 10, last 6 months with congestive heart issues. Only thing I can tell you is that they(dogs) pretty tell you when they have had enough and then you have that horrible decision to make. Just went thru that 2 weeks ago with another boxer.

So sorry for your loss, it is heartbreaking when you have to make that decision, but, its best for your four legged child. I'm hoping, since King has been healthy, he will last a couple of years. My girl lived to be 18 years old. Still miss her to this day.
