MS Office Question

A friend gave me their MS Office CD. I loaded it and got a message that says if I don't register it, I can only use the programs 25 times before I lose functionality. This is to prevent piracy etc. and I understand that.

Now suppose I buy the CD and want to install it on a replacement computer or a 2nd computer I own. Can I register it twice?

Legally, unless you buy two licenses....no.

Thats not to say it hasnt been done, just the legal answer :)

Only if the second computer you own is a laptop and you are the only one that uses it...:lmao:

Ok, lets pretend the world is perfect and all the lawyers died.

If I registered it and gave the CD to a friend and she registered it too.... What would happen (if anything)?
I read further and:

I have a Retail Copy Of Office, and I replaced my existing PC. Can I install my copy of Office on my new replacement PC?
Yes. As long as Office was completely and entirely removed from the old PC, you can install your Office on your replacement computer.

The stuff is registering online and over the phone into a database that automatically flags double registrations. Or piracy if more copies with the same number keep showing up.

Plus, when it checks for security updates, it checks to see how many people are using it...

:jameo:
And what happens if the same CD was registered to two different people?

Would it even allow it to be registered twice?

In a sense, they don't care about who owns it or even ask for a name. All they care about is how many times that serial number is showing up. And they run hardware checks online to the registering computers. Your computer and every other computer has a unique hardware configuration they can identify, much like IP addresses...

So the answer is most likely no.

The newer the version of office is, the more problematic this will be. Office 97, they don't care, they don't check...
Well it's 2007 of course. Should I register it? I don't want to mess up my friends registration (She hasn't registered it yet either).

Open Office, its free and just as good.

If you have your heart set on Microsoft Office I know someone who used the CD that came with their HP laptop and installed it onto 3 other computers without issue.

You can always call in and say the computer is not connected to the internet and get a number.
