MSNBC's future a 'big concern' for staffers as Comcast moves to separate liberal network from NBCUniversal

MSNBC staffers in the dark from its editorial direction of network to even its own name

Comcast on Wednesday officially announced it would spin off several NBCUniversal cable networks, including MSNBC, in a move that will dramatically shake up the landscape of legacy media as the liberal cable outlet will no longer be affiliated with NBC News.

Cesar Conde will continue leading the NBCUniversal News Group, but now that group only includes NBC News, the NBC News Now streaming service, Telemundo and owned-and-operated local stations. Conde loses oversight of MSNBC and CNBC in the process, and the fate of shared resources — and even the cable network's name and editorial direction — are in question.

A current MSNBC staffer is "intrigued by the amount of thought that seems to have gone into" the decision from a business standpoint, but said there is a "big concern" about what this means going forward for MSNBC.

It's probably too late to simply make it stop sucking. They've already cemented their brand and audience.

What would be nice is to have them gradually go back to center so as not to frighten the cultists, and then slowly deprogram them. It's amazing to me how many people I personally know think they're "extremely informed" because they watch MSNBC.

I guess what I don't understand it - what's the rush? It is still fairly high among most channels, and ranks higher than Bloomberg, HLN, Newsnation, Newsmax, CNN, BBC America and OAN (for news channels).

Last ranking I saw (November 19th) placed it at 12th - for cable channels, regardless of news.

As odious and pointless as I think the channel IS - a company ought to make decisions based on profit, not politics.

I don't get the reason, here.

I have TRIED to watch it. It's just - maybe because I am right wing - but if they didn't have the right to HATE so much, they'd have nothing to talk about. I've watched "The View" - they do at least try to include news stories and light hearted blocs where stuff isn't political or issue connected.

But MSNBC anchors are simply filled with disgust and rage. You know, I find the hosts on FOX pretty damned funny and not all of the guests - especially in the midday news spots - are right-leaning. I hear and read stuff all the time that I disagree with - but I can only watch MSNBC for a short enough time before I just shake my head and ask why I bothered.

My guess is the advertising people are putting their buys together for next fiscal year and getting a hard pass.

CNN talent is on the chopping block as well. This is the problem with overpaying your faces - when they go south your profit margin goes with them. It's up to them to get and keep eyeballs, making the advertisers happy. But the higher ups call the shots on content, it's unusual for a show host to have creative control and not be handed a directive and teleprompter, and someone in their ear to keep them straight. I think that's why Tucker got gone from Fox - the bosses said, "Say these things..." and Tucker said, "No."

They likely did that by cutting her on-air time way back. Isn't she only on 1-2 days a week?
I have no idea, I don't watch MSNBC
Wait a minute, a link that @GURPS just posted said her salary was cut from $30 million to $25 million. OMG how will she survive?
I agree that doesn't sound like much of a cut, if she was paid what she is worth $2.50 an hour would be about right IMO.
