(GLEN BURNIE, MD) – The Maryland State Police Crash Team is investigating a three-vehicle crash that injured two pedestrians working on the side of the road in Anne Arundel County.
At about 11:40 a.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police Glen Burnie Barrack responded to a crash at southbound Interstate-97, north of New Cut Road. According to a preliminary investigation, the driver of a black Toyota Tundra, suffered an unknown medical emergency and drove off the road. The driver, later identified as Karl Gunther, Jr., 38, of Pasadena, was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for medical treatment.
The injured pedestrians are identified as Eric Gross, 51, of Crownsville and Gary Henley, 48, of Pasadena, Maryland. Both pedestrians were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment. Gross was transported by ambulance to Anne Arundel Medical Center. Henley was transported by ambulance to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for his injuries sustained during the incident. Both Henley and Gross were standing in the grass off of the right shoulder when they were struck.
Police believe Gunther may have suffered a medical emergency when he ran off the road in a work zone and struck two parked Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration-affiliated vehicles parked on the right shoulder. Both of the unoccupied MDOT SHA affiliated vehicles had their emergency lights activated. Gross and Henley were standing outside of their vehicles when they were subsequently hit.
Investigators believe the impact of the initial crash caused the MDOT SHA contractor’s vehicle to strike the second MDOT SHA vehicle. It is unclear which vehicle hit the two workers.
