This is your captain!
Yes! The trail around the lake! It's about 8 miles, pretty rough and technical, but doable. It is muddy and leafy in spots now. Drive up Rt 5 from Great Mills Road, turn right when you see the sign for the park. They want $3 from you if you drive there..

There is also a 2-ish mile loop by St. Mary's City, just south of the College. This starts/ends at the parking lot of the historic area.

Just north of the college, there is another trail that lots of bikers and atv'ers use (or at least, used to), but I forget how to get in there..

There used to be quite a few hiking trails at Calvert Cliffs Park, don't know if you can bike there or not. Western Maryland around Cumberland has lots of State lands with trails. Harpers Ferry area or Ohiopile in Pennsylvania, although most of these would be about a 4 hour drive.

The only one that I can think of right now is St. Mary's Lake. It is a tough trail but can be done. There is some technical stuff in there, but if you can't do it, just get off and walk over the stumps. It can get REAL muddy back there. Also a couple of stream crossings. Look out for the horse apples!

Thanks for the info

I'm looking at relocating to the area from Austin, Texas and I'm glad to hear that there are some trails around there. I've never lived outside of Texas. Is bicycling possible through the winter? I've attempted to ride on ice during ice storms here and found it to be very difficult. I'm curious about the winter conditions both on and off road, as I try to use my bicycle for transportation when I can.

If I do end up moving there I'll go riding with you, Slaytor.

Thanks.

Sounds good mike! I actually moved here from Maine andthe winter months up there are quite harsh for riding although, I have gone out snow and Ice are hard so I tried to stick to groomed trails. But the winters here I dont think will be to bad... All ways up for a challenge though!

I ride my mountain bike during the winter. I have a road bike also, but during the winter the roadbike is on the trainer.

Thanks searide.... Are you a member of the SMMB by any chance? Sounds like they would be an alright group. Also have you been to snowshoe mountain? I checked out the site seems like a gnarly spot. Couldnt find directions or location...

No, I am not a member yet. With my biking buddies who are member of M.O.R.E., I tag along as a guest to see what it's like.

Snowshoe mountain - yes . been there couple years ago. The man-made structures at Snowshoe are relatively new this year (or was it last year?). I like the variety of trails on the mountain. Shuttle bus and chair lift will take you wherever you want to go. I am going to admit it's a long hard drive (5 hrs) from southern MD to get to snowshoe mtn. I go there with buddies and stay there for the weekend.
Direction - http://www.snowshoemtn.com/gettinghere.html (text and map)

I 've heard about other mountain trails closer to southern MD like some places in northern MD (1 or 2 hr drive), southern PA (2 or 3 hr drive), and in Virginia.

Well sh*t then.... guess i need to wax the board then...Hows the riding up there? Have you been? If not any place you suggest? I have not been to a place down here yet... I heard they were real small mountains compaired to the north. But I hear the parks aint so bad, not that i get into the parks anymore.. But any info would be great.. and thanks alot you been helpful Searide!!!

Yeah the parks ain't so bad. I am more into mountain riding than jibbing.
There are some small mountains down here compare to the north. There are small mountains up north compare to the big ones down here. Same difference.

i.e. Stowe VT - summit elevation 4,395 ft compare to Snowshoe WV summit elevation 4,848 ft. Stowe has longer run (green?) but Snowshoe are pretty steep so there's not much long run except for the 1.5 mile run.

I am not here to say which mountain in the east are the best. I just go for fun riding the mountains. I would ride around here for warm up and some exercise before I go out west.

I can't wait to go back to Tahoe again in January and probably the Summit county mountains in Colorado in March if my friends still plan on going.

True about small up there and large down here. As far as riding Im pretty much in the same boat, I tend to stay out of the parks nowadays, getting to that age where Im over it not to metion all the lil punks getting in the way. I think its more fun to all mountain ride and jib myself. But if you end up going out west (Colorado). Let me know if you guys want company, I got family out west and would love to go on the road. Nothing like a good road trip!!!!! To hit some gnarly terrain.

Hey just saw this post. I'm "in" the SMMB group down here. Basically it's just a list/google groups of a bunch of us who ride together. This link should take you to the GoogleGroups site for SMMB:

http://groups.google.com/group/SMMBMembers

Join the mailing list and you can get all sorts of chatter on when people are riding the lake. The winter season tends to slow down activity...only a few keep on riding through the coldest winter months.

The lake is prettymuch it for immediate trail riding around here. I used to try to ride the trails down by the college a couple years ago, but the ones behind the rugby fields/under powerlines aren't kept up for bike use (ATVs, etc just tear it up), and the ones around historic just really don't offer up much plus there can be a lot of joggers/walkers on the trail.

MORE is definitely the best place to check out for local trails and rides. I've met up with a few of the MORE rides, but not a whole too many. Looking to get in on more of them this winter/next season.

The trail around the lake is pretty easy, but you can make it longer and play on some of the rough sections a bit. Log jumping is common. Watch for those copperheads in the warmer months. :yay:
