Music CD question. Help please?

What's the best brand of blank music CD to use and where can I buy them? I record songs off of my computer and some from other CD's to make "my favorite" music collections. I've used Memorex and they worked for a while but developed some "skipping" problems on both my CD players. I've used Sony and they had real problems! Skipping, stopping in mid song and even partly recording a song then changing tracks and starting again so that I have the same song partly on 2 tracks. I have a nice Panasonic CD player/ recorder and it could be causing the problem but I need to make sure it isn't the CD media itself first. Thanks folks! I appreciate it.

Are you a heavy smoker? Are the CD players in rooms that might be humid in the summer? The optical pickups could be dirty rather than the CDs having issues. Do the CDs play correctly on someone else's player?

I buy cheapo CDs and have never had any problems. Big trick is to treat them with respect and don't scratch EITHER side of the CD surface.

No I'm not a smoker at all. The cd's are played in my house & car only. I usually make one up and keep it in my car then make another copy for my house player. Never tried them on another player because I have 2 that seem to work ok. When you say "cheapo" what brands do you buy and where? Thanks.

CD R/RW degrade over time, granted it should not be in your life time, however do you leave these in a hot car, subject to extremes in weather?

Thanks RP. Yes I do. What bothers me most is that they'll play about 16 songs without any problem and then stop right in the middle of a song and the display says "reading disc". Then I have to remove and reinsert the disc. I can't ever listen to the entire disc! It does it every time but not always on the same song. I'll try getting cheaper ones and cleaning the laser disc reader for now.

Ok. I'm going to do some recording when I get back fro OC so I'll give Staples a try. I knew I shouldn't have bought from Best Buy when I couldn't get anyone to answer my questions about their cd's. I just bought a 25 pack of Sony cd's and threw half of them away within the first 2 weeks. Thanks GW.

Some of my older CDs occasionally skip, but usually when I clean them they're good to go again (sold in a kit). Maybe you could try that first and see what happens before buying new ones.

I always buy memorex and/or imation, and have never had a single problem with any CD .... and I've probably made over 1,000.

Ok, here's a radical thought: Would it be easier to convert to MP3? Get an MP3 player, put all your music on it. You can get a small FM transmitter to transmit into any FM radio. I do that for the bike and the truck. Eliminate the CDs altogether.

or one of the new radios with a USB port and skip the mp3 player .... they read the songs right off the thumb drive ....

This is in my game plan to update my listening habits. I need one for my Harley because it doesn't have a radio. I'm going to put 2 speakers on it somehow later on.
I think I could eliminate my cd recorder completely with an MP3 but I'm still asking questions about them. (I'll keep my cd player for now). I hear that they are more practical than cd's except for battery life, am I correct on that? My niece said that they can hold up to 500 songs also? Thanks GW!

Depends on the unit. I have an Archos with an 80 Gb drive in it. I have close to 1500 songs on it, and have only used about 6 Gb. Battery life again depends on the unit and the batteries. Mine uses very little juice, and I upgraded the batteries to a much higher mAH rating, and can go for over 12 hours of non-stop use. But it also runs on 12V, so I plug it in to the bike or truck. Never dies. There are a lot of options when it comes to MP3 players. Just start looking at them and see what you like.

I'm liking it! Will start checking them out tomorrow. :yay:

If anyone cares: Thanks for all the advice my friends. The mp3 player won out. I went to Best Buy yesterday and bought a nice little(very little) mp3 player and a wireless fm transmitter for the car. I actually figured out how to use it, put songs into it and how to get songs off my cd collection onto the computer then onto the player. I got 60 songs on it so far and it sounds great! The problem is that it's sooo small! It's the size of a matchbook. It transmits great into my car & house radios. No distortion or static.
Thanks again to all of you for your advice. I might have a CD player/recorder for sale in a few weeks.... :buddies:

:coffee: Naw... don't care.....

:lmao: Glad you found something that works! Now you have to find a way to play it on the bike. Maybe helmet speakers instead of a whole stereo system.

Yeah, I might just use the small earphones that come with it. Except I can't use both earpieces because they'll block my hearing. Plus, since the Harley is loud, I might have trouble hearing the music but I'm going to give it a try when I get back from OC on the 17th. The unit is soo small I can clip it to my shirt or jeans. Hey, thanks again for your advice! :buddies:
