My Cat Bites - Help!

CandaceMM

Ummmmm ....
I rescued a kitty a few months ago from Last Chance. Gemma, my kitty, has adapted well except for one thing. She likes to bite.

I've looked online to try to find advice about how to get her to stop, and one thing that I found is to press down on her tongue when she bites. I've tried that, and it doesn't work.

Another thing that people recommend is when she's trying to bite, to give her a toy and let her bite that.

I've tried both, and nothing is working. I'm not touching her in any way that should irritate her ... and sometimes she bites when my hand is just hanging out not even touching her.

Can anyone give any suggestions?

I have one like that he's mellowed as he got older but will still bite when he doesn't want to be bothered. I just didn't have the heart to let him go so he is still with me.

I don't even have to touch her ... and sometimes she just comes and seeks me out just to bite me.

When I adopted her, the paperwork said that she's 2 years old. I was convinced that Gemma wasn't 2 because she was incredibly small. I figured her to be around a year old. When I took her to the vet, they said that she was at least around a year old because she has her adult teeth.

I'm trying to be patient with her, but I'm getting frustrated because I constantly have marks all over my hands from her nipping at me. I really don't want to give her up because I've grown attached to her and I love that she's grown attached to me (she follows me around my apartment constantly).

I just want her to stop biting.

try squirting her or telling her no or say ouch and sometimes they understand that or do what i do which is hold the mouth closed for a min . I have one that just started biting me and i just move out of his way and after a few he gets the hint.

Does anyone know how to get rid of bad gas my male cat keeps passing it and its making me want to puke

Squirting? Haha! That doesn't phase Gemma. She constantly wants to play with my venetian blinds in the middle of the night. I keep a squirt bottle by my bed. I squirt her and she turns around and looks at me "Keep squirting me b***h because it doesn't bother me!" And then she goes back to playing with the blinds.

Gemma is a little difficult ....

I'll try the hold her mouth shut method. Maybe that will help.

Anything under 2 is still a juvenile and the drive to "play" is very strong.
How about getting another cat, her own size and age as a playmate?
Or when she bites, redirect the action by shoving a soft toy in her mouth.
She wants to play "hunter/prey" games and you are the only thing to play with.
So you are the prey to attack and bite...

Don't worry ... I won't give up on my Gemma. I wouldn't do that ... I couldn't. I know that she's still considered a little guy, I'm just hoping that this is a phase that I can help her grow out of.

When she bites, I get up and walk away from her and tell her that we're not going to be friends if she keeps biting and that no one wants to be friends with someone who bites!

I think I'm crazy.

Both of my cats used to let noxious farts that would have you doing the combat crawl across the carpet to get away safely. I was feeding them some cheap cat food, and switched them to Iams. Cut down on the farts and acrid smell of their poop too.
However, my cat Ling-Ling... I think she has IBS or something. I have never had a cat to let audible farts and poop as much as she does. I don't know what it is, but she's just a smelly cat. ... kind of like some people I know.
I'd try switching the food. If that doesn't help, a trip to the vet might be called for.

As far as the cat biting, someone previously mentioned saying No, and holding the mouth shut. I've had success with that too.

...bag of meat used to bite up to a couple years of age. Vrail kept telling him to stop in this cooing mommy voice as he gnawed on her hand. She patiently explained that seeings how she didn't bite him he therefore he had no call to bite her.

He finally did cut it out after some time and several skin grafts. She thinks it's because she nurtured him out of doing it. I think he simply realized that it cost him energy.

How to Live with a Neurotic Cat (Hardcover)

"From the Inside Flap - Cat owners know the truth: cats, in fact, own them and their feline needs must be met—sooner rather than later. In this delightfully irreverent book, highlighted by Jackie Geyer's evocative illustrations, the author of the highly successful, How to Live with a Neurotic Dog, offers coping mechanisms for those who struggle with the endless task of keeping their cats pampered and therefore happy."

This one's probably more appropriate:

Your Cat's Just Not That Into You: "What Part of Meow Don't You Understand?" (Paperback)

"It was one of those perfect mornings. There I was, lying in bed with my cuddly Maine Coon, Shakespeare, snuggled up against me, his eyes half-closed, purring and exuding warmth like a giant, smelly heating pad. Suddenly he meowed and in a matter of seconds was off the bed and in the next room. Did I do someting wrong? Should I have let him get under the quilt? I really thought Shakespeare and I were having a "moment."

You could always take a Dremel tool and grind his teeth flat. Or take the easier route and just use a hammer.
