my dog ate Comet

No, not the reindeer - the household cleanser. While cleaning the bathroom this evening, I sprinkled it in the toilet and walked away for a minute. Never occurred to me that he might actually drink water with Comet in it. I think he only got 2-3 laps of the water before I came running down the hall screaming at him. It's been about an hour and he seems fine. I read on a vet site to dilute milk and water 50:50 and give him a half cup every 30 minutes or so for a while, so I've done that. He's 8 months old, about 60 pounds. Do you think I should do anything more or just wait and see? Thanks!

Hope he's okay. This happened with one of my cats a long time ago, he was fine, but since then, it's a habit to put the lids down always.

Thanks! Should have googled this first instead of just looking for info on the particular situation. I am on the phone w/them right now.

make sure to let us all know what they say.
Its not like something like this could not happen to anyone here with pets.

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center was great - I talked with a vet tech who consulted with a vet toxicologist - they said the milk and water was fine but I did not have to continue it. Given that the Comet was diluted and he probably only ingested a little, they said to wait and watch him. If he vomits, they said take food and water away for a hour, then give the water back. If he vomits again, I should call back. If he is OK after that, I can give him little portions of his regular food on his regular schedule (no need for a bland diet). They said he might have some gastrointestinal upset. He hasn't thrown up at all, he did cough a little about a hour after it happened but that is all.

Cost $65 for the call, and they provided the information within a few minutes. Plus I got a direct number to call back if I do have further questions or concerns. Definitely worth it for the peace of mind, esp. on a Sunday night/holiday weekend! Thanks ICit, for pointing me in their direction.

I'm still surprised he would drink water that smells like that, but I don't think he even knew there is water in toilets before tonight (we always keep the toilet lids closed). Now I know to be extra careful when cleaning too. He seems to be doing fine.

Stick a handle up his ass and mop the floor with him.

How is the little Comet Drinker today? I'm sure that he/she is fine!
He is absolutely fine today, no signs of any effects - ate all his food as usual and snagged a couple of hotdogs off the counter as well. Doesn't seem to have any soreness in his mouth either. I was worried that it might cause a chemical burn on his gums or tongue that would take longer to develop but he is eating, drinking, and playing as normal. Thanks for asking!

Wonderful update, and a warning to pet owners that no matter how safe you think your home is, it only takes one slip to result in an emergency.

So pleased that your pup and you are doing great!!!:yahoo:

A dog will dig through a litter box like its his personal chocolate factory, do you think the smell of some cleaner is going to throw him off?

Good to know, didn't even know ASPCA had such a hotline. Even if it was more than $65, I'd probably pay it simply because it's going to worthy non-profit.

True! I just know the harsh chemical/bleach smell of Comet makes my eyes water. Though when I was doing a search to see if I could find any information on the situation, a number of pages popped up about people (OCD types) who eat Comet. So apparently there must be something about it that attracts!

(Sorry - meant this in reply to BCP)
