We went through this when she was a year old and now she has them again. I feed her Science Diet C/D which is supposed to stop the stones from forming again. Anybody have a dog with stones and found anything that keeps them from coming back? I feel horrible for her since you can tell she is uncomfortable again.

I would call your vet and discuss this with them. they might have ideas. also don't they give meds to make the stones shrink so the dog isn't in pain? I know when my dog gets a bladder infection they give her antibiotics and within 3 days shes doing alot better.

Oh we went to the vet and now she is on S/D and antibotics to try to dissolve the stones. This actually worked last time and she didn't have to have surgery. I just want to know if I'm going to be going through this every 2 years or so.

Wow. I feel your pain. At least your dog has stones that may be dissolvable. My boy's stones do not. The vet has him on Hills Prescription U/D.

Do you feed your dog any kind of treats like cheese? Calcium is not good for stones?

Nope. I give her treats with cranberry in them and even give her a cranberry pill with her meal. That is good to know though. I try not to give them any people food.

My aunt's dog had oxilite (sp?) stones too. They are common in boy dogs from what I read. Has he gotten then again or has the food been working?

Carlisle's stones were 10% Magnesium Ammonium (Struvite) and Ammonium Acid Urate 90%. He is a Dalmatian. He had surgery in February. He had around 250 stones ranging from 1 mm up to 2 cm. The doc said his poor bladder was the size of a soccer ball and he was totally blocked. So far so good. The food seems to be working so far. Keeping my fingers crossed and watching him closely.

I also had a male Dalmatian who had bladder stones. I was also prescribed U/D and it worked like a charm. Never had another issue. I hope your boy has the same luck!!

My son had a male Dalmation who had bladder stones also, had to have surgery when he was about a year old, vet put him on special diet, they never came back, but he died unexpectedly at about 5 years old from another problem, that I cant remember what it was, maybe liver problem.

Dals are known for them due to their highly acidic urine. Males especially more so than females. Carlisle was my foster. He came in from North Carolina. Heartworm positive, malnourished, deaf, 3 teeth left in his mouth and only 4 years old. Poor boy had been through hell and back. Got him back on his feet and looking good and healthy and then the stones hit. I am not comfortable letting him be adopted out because he has had such a rough life, I told rescue to take him off the adoption list and I will keep him. He has just had such a bad life so far, I don't want to turn him loose because I am afraid he would not be monitored for his stone condition.
