My home computer is DEAD.

When it is turned on, we get a white screen of nothing. Completely dead.

Anybody on here willing to come out and try to get it running again?

If not, who should I call/take it to?

call the geeksquad they will come out and fix it or you can take it to the store and they will fix it there (they are in best buy in the park).

And if that doesn't work, use a bigger hammer.

My computer came with a recovery disk. If you have one I would attempt to start it with that. Good luck.

Can you tell if it's going ahead and accessing the disk?

Video? Have you hooked another monitor to it? Is the monitor displaying a "No signal" message at any time?

Do you hear the post?

Wife is the one dealing with the computer, so she'd be the one to answer these questions. She posted a couple days ago about it.

Anyway,
She tried the supplied recovery disk in the last day or 2. No joy.
It's not doing ANYTHING now.
If it's gonna be a bunch of $$ to fix, I don't see doing it when I can get a new machine for $400.00 from Dell.

Hello huntr1,

I'm sorry to hear the bad news about your computer! Talk about an unwelcome surprise. :cussing:

As of right now, it is difficult to pin-point the exact issue your computer is having, as it is displaying very generic symptoms. The problem could be something as small as an operating system problem, or the problem could be as serious as a hardware failure. The only way to find out exactly what went wrong would be to physically look at it. Do you have any data on the computer that is of significant importance? Things such as accounting data, office documents, photos, etc.? If so, before you consider junking the computer, you may want to try to recover these files. Even if the computer is not starting properly, there is always a chance of getting these files back.

On the contrary, if you do not have any data on the computer that you would like to keep, there is always the option of purchasing a new system (as you previously mentioned). If you are in the market for a new one, I'll gladly recommend a good system to you based on your needs. I have had great luck with Dell models. The support and warranty programs from them are remarkable. Use caution when you call computer companies, Dell included, or go to stores for a new computer. Generally they add on several upgrades that you may not necessarily need.

Best of luck with everything! And if you need anything, please let me know. I'm located very close to Dunkirk.

Instead of paying $$4 to "recover" the data, go to Best Buy and get a hard drive enclosure.DYNEX..about $50.00.
Take you INTERNAL hard drive out of the PC and insert it in the Hard Drive Enclosure. You now have and external hard drive that you can hook up to another PC via a USB connection. PC reads drive as a normal external hard drive and you can access ALL your data :)

I have 2 of these in my time and they work great!!

Good Luck!!

While this is a good recommendation, it may not be completely necessary. If the problem is operating system related, there is a very good chance that everything can be recovered using the original installation CD & the command line.

Did you feel something hit you in the back of the head when you paid $50 for that? I paid $20 for mine...

Best buy... Maybe I got the cheap one...

Oh well..guess they gotta make a few buck somehow..
Thanks

Huntr1,

Any news on that dead PC? I hope everything has worked out well for you!
We bought a new one over the weekend. Just a new tower. Came home and hooked it up to our 18 month old monitor and the monitor was dead. :banghead: Went back out and bought a new monitor.

Comparing new PC to old one is like comparing an Enzo Ferrari to a Yugo.

Gonna hold onto the old PC and turn it into a kid computer if we can get it running again.
