My puppy needs braces!

I have a 3 month old Jack Russell and he has bucked teeth! He has a severe overbite. While its very cute I am also concerned. When he sleeps on his back with his head tilted back you can see his teeth hanging out, thats how bad it is. He still has his baby teeth. Does anyone know if this will correct itself?

The vet said if it is too severe they will have to do something. Does anyone know what type of measures they take to correct it? Both my kids are in braces maybe i should cash them in for some puppy braces????

I contacted the lady I got him from and informed her. At this point I love him so much I would not trade him for anything. But I did ask her for another puppy either discounted (which I would not really want right now, I already have a 2 year old JR as well) or a refund of a portion of the money that I paid.

The vet said he cant be bread or shown but I don't care about that, planned to neuter him anyway I just wanted him because we love them and he is so sweet. If I don't get anything back from the lady I got him from, not a biggy either. Even if I had seen or known about the problem I may have taken him in fear that nobody else would. But I figured if there is a possibility we may have to pay a fortune for correction, it was worth a shot!

Anyone who knows anything about bucked teeth dogs.....please give me all the info you got!

Don't get me wrong it is very cute but it is so pronounced that when you look in his mouth his bottom teeth hit right in his upper palllet and his side fangs not really bite but sit on his bottom lip. Sometimes he has some difficulty eating and I am not sure if that is due to the baby teeth or his bite. I read online of one dog that had an overbite in which it caused the dog severe pain when eating and when you touch his head. I hope this is not the case with him but I guess only time will tell.

I know they are not human but I get offended when family members laugh at it because I am afaid it will give the sweet little boy a complex! I know silly!

I don't know about a dog with bucked teeth, but if any cat could have benefited from braces it'd be my dear baby Sampson. The vet said as long as he can eat correctly and you make sure they stay clean, there's nothing wrong with it. If anything it gives my baby character and as a momma to him, makes me love him even more. His crooked teeth are at the bottom and looks a little like a jackolatern, but he's the cutiest most cuddly boy cat one could ever hope for. Of course, he will get ribbed here and there and when I pick him up from vets, etc.... they say... Awwww! How cute!!! Only a face a mother could love!! and comments like that and other hurtful things from folks that see him, but he's sensitive and 100% all heart. He's my boy funky teeth and all. He hides when people come over and takes awhile to get used to folks but he's always around me like glue if its just me around. Also, his baby teeth were normal, it wasn't until his adult teeth came in that they came in that way I think. Maybe the puppy will outgrow his, but if he doesn't, its just more of the pooch to love. I hope that helps some.

That is comforting to know! I don't care how it looks as long as it does not affect him physically. Its good to know that the vet said as long as there is no trouble eating. I cant bare the thought of him in pain and then the other part of me could not bare the thought of them cutting into his little gums. Everywhere I read it just said "surgery may be required" I hope it will be fine. Right now since they are baby teeth, I put water in his food so its softer for him to eat and if I have to do that forever so be it!

I have heard of braces for dogs, but have no idea who would do them. Best bet is to just ask your vet. I remember having braces as a kid and they hurt like hell, your dog may not like that.

How would that work? When kids have braces, they aren't supposed to eat anything that would potentially knock the braces off their teeth. Dogs eat crunchy food and chew on bones and what-not.

What?!
Precious has a pretty bad underbite and her teeth are pretty snarly. She has never had any problems.. well beside us poking fun at her.

But wait, there's more...

Emmitt has a terrible underbite, too (looks like Fire Marshall Bill) ... but it's part of his charm ... his pathetic looking self is what makes him so adorable and unique.

It sounds like you're pup is parrott mouthed and braces won't help this particular overbite. it's the actual jawbone that's misaligned, in fact it the underjaw that's malformed (too short) not the top one. And regarding your breeder giving you something back, well he was like that when you took him. if the breeder didn't notice, OR didn't tell you, the fact remains, he is what he is. Been there done that, i have a deaf jack that the breeders didn't notice was deaf.

He'll be fine as long as he can eat normally. If his adult teeth begin to poke into his mouth anywhere, they would prolly just pull those teeth out. no biggie. that's the surgery i'd imagine they're referring too. FWIW, DON'T personify your puppy. he has NO idea you're laughing AT him, but prolly does like the laughter. to him, that's a good thing. he's reading a pleasant attitude towards him. Oh and yes an over/underbite IS inherited and some breeds don't encourage breeding it (like jacks) because as a hunting/working breed they need to be able to use their teeth to the fullest potential and if they don't come together correctly, they're not going to be efficient when killing those vermin they so love to kill. like chicken at my farm
