My Scary Day: Breath Holding....

It's only life....
Ok, so the scariest thing ever happened to me today. I was on the porch w/ my 2 1/2 year old nephew and he was getting on his lil play school roller coaster thing that he gets on like 20 times a day. Well his foot slipped and he fell, its probably less than a 12inch fall. He started crying so I picked him up. All of a sudden his entire bosy went limp and when I looked at him his face was turning blue. His mom who was 10 feet away yelled for him to breathe. I patted him on the back a few times and he took a gigantic breath....like when you come up from the bottom of the swimming pool. Then his eyes rolled back for just a second.

Anyway...this happened to him abotu a year ago when he bumped his head on something in a store. The Dr. call it breath holding syndrome and said that a lot of lil kids do it when they get hurt or get the wind knocked out of them bc they dont know how to react. It was totally scary to feel his little limp body in my arms. But 5 mins later he was totally normal.

Has this happened to anyone before?

I'm back from Ohio....seems like I missed alot. Oh and we chased down a puppy on Fri that was running through traffic on a highway...I swear it was like the wonder pets.

I used to do the exact same thing when I was around that age, even more when I got angry. My parents had me tested for Epilepsy first, then concurred I was just holding my breath.

not as uncommon as you think

I too have an almost 3 year old who does the same thing. Started when he was one. If he hurts himself pretty bad or gets very upset it will take a minute for him to catch his breath. It is terrifying the first couple times. As hard as it is to do, if you ignore it they will breathe. It's when you react that they keep doing it. I didn't believe it at first and had all kinds of tests done at childrens but it turned out to be just that- breath holding. Kids can be quite stubborn

This may sounds wierd, but when my youngest was little, he did the same thing, I had him tested as well. It was just as many others, breath holding. The Dr. simply looked at me and said, when he does it again, simply hold his face and give a big breath and blow hard...it actually brings them back, worked like a charm every time. Eventually, he outgrew it, so there is hope.

Had a son that did that but only when he got mad. Doc said just lay him on the floor and he'll come around on his own, which he obviously did as he' 39 now. Took some getting used to not going into a panic mode and having my own heart stop.

my daughter has done this since she was 2 months old (shes 4 now). the first time she did this it scared the hell out of me... my beautiful 2 month old baby girl just went completely blue and limp in my arms... screamed for my husbad to call 911 and by the time he got the phone, she was awake and fine. i've learned when to "expect" her to do this, tired, hurt or upset, and to make sure she is laying down somewhere (didn't get to her in time one day...she hit the floor.) shes been checked out by a cardiologist and a neurologist both to make sure there wasnt any underlying causes for her doing this. both came up clean, said she should grow out of it by the time she is 4 or 5.... still waiting!!
