Very disappointing comedy!
This is a high-concept film which imagines a romantic relationship between an everyday schlub and a world-renowned female superhero and the complications such lovers would face. I had high hopes because of a strong cast (Uma Thurman, Luke Wilson, and Scary Movie's Anna Faris) and a good comedy director, Ivan Reitman (Dave, Ghostbusters, Stripes). It was, as I said before, very disappointing.
The performances are quite mediocre. Thurman, who plays bold superhero G-Girl and her shy alter-ego, never finds the right balance. In the costume, she's missing the necessary edginess and is too often just over-the-top. Out of it, she's too bland and indifferent to leave an impression. Wilson's out of his league. His high-brow, low-key comedy style isn't complimented by the over-the-top farce he finds himself in. His multiple facial expressions come off as forced as well. The other actors, including Faris and Rainn Wilson (Dwight on NBC's hit comedy "The Office"), aren't given enough to do to leave a lasting impression.
Reitman's direction also fails to impress. The talent he showed directing the modern classic Ghostbusters is M.I.A. The action sequences here are bland and downright boring and Reitman's comedy sequences fail to achieve liftoff, perhaps because he's missing a star as sharp and clever as Bill Murray (who brought Ghostbusters, and Stripes, to life).
If it weren't for the 'A'-list cast and crew, I wouldn't be surprised if this had become a sitcom. Most of the action and humor has a mediocre TV-feel and I half expected recorded laughs to follow the stale one-liners. Despite an occasional laugh-worthy gag and decent photography, I recommend you wait for DVD or even TV to see My Super Ex-Girlfriend, if you want to see it at all.
