Nagin takes swipe at NYC in defending local recovery efforts

From staff and wire reports

Apparently annoyed with insinuations that New Orleans’ recovery is lagging, Mayor Ray Nagin takes a swipe at the pace of New York’s redevelopment of the World Trade Center site on a TV news show that will air Sunday.

On a tour of wreckage in the devastated Lower 9th Ward, Nagin said much of the debris has been removed from public property. When a “60 Minutes” correspondent pointed out flood-damaged cars on the streets, Nagin shot back, “You guys in New York can’t get a hole in the ground fixed, and it’s five years later. So let’s be fair,” according to CBS.

The program is scheduled to air Sunday night. Text and a video clip from the Nagin piece were posted on CBS’ Web site Thursday

This guy just never learns. :dork:

I think they're taking his comments out of contents and overblowing this. I don't think he was trying to criticize New York in any way, I think he was putting things in perspective by saying that in New York, they had one centralized location of destruction and that area is still in the rebuilding phase, so why are you criticizing N.O. which faced massive devastation only a year into the rebuilding process.

I dig what he's saying!

Nagin is an A$$. There's a difference between "clean-up" and "rebuild." The WTC site was clean within weeks, this guy is giving an interview in front of year-old ruins.

Maybe he should try to get Trent Lott to help him

How can you say that, in light of all the other inappropriate comments he's made over the last year? Or were those all taken out of context and overblown as well?

Nagin is still an a$$ but I agree with you about the comparison between the Terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Natural Disaster to thousands of square miles from Katrina. The storm affected businesses, phones, power, devastated the entire infrastructure, homes and displaced hundreds of thousands of people in 2 states...

And most of the people left homeless (or dead) where also the people who run the city like: public works, police, firefighters, city government, phone, water, sewage, power, nurses, doctors, store/restaurant owners, etc. etc.

I'm from Manhattan and been to ground zero and the surrounding area. I also spend 3 weeks working with the American Red Cross in Louisiana and Mississippi and the Shear magnitude of the area of destruction was surreal.

Both situations are different and there should be no comparison, however Nagin was still a walking cluster **** in his preparations and evacuation of the city before the storm. They should spotlight that and leave NYC out of it...

Two of the best thoughts, in my opinion, in this thread. Sorta just about sums up what I was thinking to myself. :yay:<!-- / message -->

Typical for Nagin, but looking at the track of Ernesto Mayor Nagin better go pre-stage all the busses, tell the cops no running away this time, and get ready to get his people out of the city before the storm hits.

So, how many days are we talking about, until Ernesto hits the area?

Nagin better get this one right; If he messes this one up, it should be a curtain call for him.

The 1100 AM forecast for today shows it bearing down on Louisiana late on the 31st or early on the 1st with maximum sustained wind at 100 KTS (115 MPH) and gusts to 120 KTS (138 MPH).

Hmmmm............5 days notice, huh?

Actually, we've been hearing about it for 2 or 3 days now. I wonder what he's done so far, and what plans he's got in the works.

Gonna be interesting to see who he'll try to pin the blame on, this time around.
