Nanny?

In part of my freak out over having twins - the financial part of it is, obviously, a big part - and I've been thinking a bit about the whole daycare thing. . . I've been thinking of hiring a nanny. Anyone else use one? Or know what the going rate is?

I'm guessing there are agencies available for references or whatever, but any additional info I could get would be great!

OMG, twins! You should be your own nanny and get a daycare license. That way you stay home with your kids while makeing a sh!tload of money from other people. Daycare for 2 babies is going to be ridiculous. So unless you make 6 figures, a good portion of your paycheck will go to daycare. good luck.

That's why after I had twins I decided to stay home. I work now and my children are teens.

Unfortunately, staying home is not an option for me as I am the breadwinner of the house. Although I do like, and have been told more than once now, the idea of becoming my own nanny!! Maybe I'll look into that - it would be nice to get to stay home with the babies and still make money!

Is there any way your boss could fix it so you could do your job out of your home? I know when my stepmother was suddenly faced with having to raise her two grandchildren they made it so that she could do her job from her home. See if this is a possibility.

My boss would never go for it! I used to work 7:00 - 3:00 - and last month he changed my hours to 9:00 - 5:00 (just to be @ss really, because I don't do anything more from 3 - 5 than I used to do from 7 - 9). I work for one of the big GSE's that aren't doing so well right now (as you all know it's never good when the President talks about where you work!) so I don't want to rock the boat by asking!! My ultimate plan is/was to resign after my maternity leave anyway - of course, that's contingent upon me finding something closer to home after they're born! I figure with what I spend in gas, I could take a pay cut - I just can't be out of work.

HalfAngel,

I will pray for you that you can find solution. Nanny to work out of your home might be a cheapest way to go, but make sure she has taken all of the "requirement" to be a Nanny along with references.

Other option is ask your relatives to babysit your kids and you will pay them for thier time.

Third option, quit and open up a daycare or become a Nanny yourself.

Fourth option, ask a friend who's willing to watch your kids at much reduced fee and ask her to signed up for a nanny license. Reason is that you don't want someone to call on you and your friend and your friend can get arrested for babysitting without license.

I know it's a hard decision to make. While you still got some time to think about it, research your options.

Thanks! While I am concerned over the financial aspect of daycare - I've no doubt that I will figure it out and be fine. I've plenty of 'extras' I can cut without being seriously deprived! I was still thinking, though, that it would be easier - maybe cheaper - to hire a nanny and was wondering if anyone else had gone that route.

I just don't want my post to be mis-read that I came here crying woe over money because I'm having twins!! No, I didn't plan on having two - but it happened, it's a gift, and I certainly wouldn't trade the outcome for anything else at this point!

Worst case scenario - my daughter will be going to pre-K next year - we were fine with 2 daycare bills - so we'll be tight for a year or so. But, we won't be bankrupt over it.

You're very welcome. I don't see you "crying" woe over money because you're having twins. Daycare are EXPENSIVE especially if you are having two newborn babies and one 2 years old. That can easily take your whole paycheck and leave nothing leftover for other bills and food. You're right to be concerned and wants to check out your other options.

I agree that your twins are a "gift"! :huggy:

I hope someone else can help you if they have nanny experience.

I do know there is one forumite member here that's a nanny. Hopefully, she will see this thread and will jump in to help you.

On average she'd be looking at $400. If she's lucky they might knock off $25 per week for sibling discount. Not just that but it's damn near impossible to find someone with 2 infant spots open.

You can get an Au Pair for like $300 a week and that would take care of all of your child care needs. My neighbors used to do it in the summer for years while their son was young. You'd want one that has a lot of experience though and one that can stay for an extension period...wouldn't hurt to look into though, similar to a nanny. Good luck!
