Nation of immigrants

1. This might be one of the dumbest things you've ever written. Of course we are a nation of citizens once we arrive here. We are all immigrants from somewhere unless you have Native american blood. All those people who came through Ellis island just showed up and came in. No applying for asylum . Talk about open borders. You would have been peeing yourself

2. This is the false dichotomy you people are always going on and on about how immigrants drain social services which is not the case at all. In fact they add to the economy.

3. You re confusing two seperate ideas here. This falls under the category of your false narrative of the black welfare queen.

Seriously to think you thought you were on to some great epiphany here is laughable.

You should just delete this thread
I had no epiphany, I understood that even American Indians are descendants of immigrants, that welfare is not a racial thing, that legal immigration is both a good thing and different from illegal immigration, and that coming through Ellis Island is the exact opposite of open borders long before either of us posted in this thread

Good so you agree we are a nation of immigrants.

Ellis island was the definition of open borders as there were no qualifications to entry. You just had to show up

Nope, citizens

Yep, show up at the legal point of entry, register, meet the criteria, etc. Seriously, you can look it up, not everyone was allowed in.

Willful ignorance.

No wonder you support Trump despite him failing at everything he promised and in many cases doing the opposite.

It's nearly impossible for you to say you were wrong isn't it?

20% were detained. You could be denied entry for being considered likely to be unable to support yourself

Plus there was that pesky steamship line ticket......no road built by US dollars to ride up to the border....and Progs feeding you and giving you truck rides...... and they came and got jobs, learned English, assimilated to the regular population and made the USA stronger by not sapping her for benefits and freebies

Why do you believe that the US paid for the Pan american highway when that is not the case?

immigrants today come and get jobs and assimilate to the regular population dn make the US stronger.

It has been shown in this very thread that immigrants dont use more government resources than whites but you still claim erroneously that they do because that is what Trump dn the GOP want you to think

You are aware that there are white immigrants and non-white US citizens, right Joe?

God your silly games of gotcha are stupid and inconsequential when we are discussing real issues.

Why did you earlier use the exact same phrasing then to discuss the uneven use of government benefits?

Please try and grow up and have a discussion on the merits of your position or mine, but the idiotic profanity-spewing drivel does nothing to drive the conversation or assist in either one of us gaining insight.

"Merits of your position"? Trans? Merits? Position? The only merit Trans has is foaming-at-the-mouth anger and hate. The only position she has is squatting over her cesspool of a computer trying to squeeze out another profane-laced, hate-filled rant.

They showed up and were registered.

And, not all were allowed entry:
Between 1892 and 1954, more than twelve million immigrants passed through the U.S. immigration portal at Ellis Island, enshrining it as an icon of America's welcome. That story is well known. But Ellis was also a place of detainment and deportation, an often-heartbreaking counterpoint to the joy and relief of coming to America.
Ellis Island waylaid certain arrivals, including those likely to become public charges, such as unescorted women and children. Women could not leave Ellis Island with a man not related to them. Other detainees included stowaways, alien seamen, anarchists, Bolsheviks, criminals and those judged to be "immoral." Approximately 20 percent of immigrants inspected at Ellis Island were temporarily detained, half for health reasons and half for legal reasons.
...
The exclusion of foreign radicals from America was nothing new.
...
Soon, Ellis Island's role changed from immigrant depot to detention center. In 1919, as a wave of anti-immigration hysteria swept the country, Frederic C. Howe, Commissioner of the Immigration Service, wrote despondently, "I have become a jailer."
...
Further restrictions followed, such as the National Origins Act, which allowed prospective immigrants to be examined in their country of origin, and often refused before making the trip to Ellis Island. Soon after the new law went into effect, Ellis Island "looked like a deserted village," commented one official.
...
By the 1930s, Ellis Island was used almost exclusively for detention and deportation.

I could go on and on, but you get the point - Ellis Island was a legal port of entry, one where immigrants came to register themselves and, ultimately, be judged on ability to enter the country. I know, I know, PBS is such a right wing, radical, racist organization that their points have to be made up, but, I looked into it and it really is true.
