The Navy Sees A Bright Military Future In 3-D Printing | Popular Science
Hmmmm...I might have to look into who's in charge of this effort...
I actually thought about this a few months ago. Sure, there are too many things that are printable right now. But I could definitely see a few lines in an RFP that push for designs that make use of 3D printable parts. Or maybe the Navy will start research into 3D printers that can print metal parts (I know there is work going on in that area, but not sure if any exist).Rather than carrying around spares of every needed part, a ship with a 3-D printer on board could make needed replacement parts on demand. This innovation has vast potential to let ships do more with less. But the potential for shipboard 3-D printing doesn't stop there. The authors go on to discuss printing human tissue, which could literally be a lifesaver, and printers that are able to recycle shipboard waste into new raw materials.
