"Tragedy struck close to home on September 16, 2013 when twelve people were killed at the Washington Navy Yard. As a partner to the United States Navy, TAPS was called upon to provide comfort and care to the families profoundly affected that day.

To assist the families following the shooting, TAPS has set up a designated fund that anyone may contribute to called the Navy Yard Tragedy Family Support Fund. All donations made to this fund will be used to provide comfort and care for the families from the shooting, including support programs and casework assistance for unmet needs."

TAPS is a great program.

However, as a program that helps survivors of deceased uniformed military heros...are they going to be donating any effort or services to the spouses and families of the fallen civilians and contractors at the Navy Yard?

I'm a little unclear about that and if I make a donation, I want to make sure it's going where I intended.

From their homepage:

"TAPS Blog | Our hearts and thoughts go out to the families whose loved ones died or were injured. Just as we did after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, TAPS will provide support and care for the families of Department of Defense civilian workers or defense contractors who died in this terrible tragedy. All of them were on duty for America yesterday. TAPS offers tips for those seeking to express sympathy and support to the families of those who died. "

I am so glad that they are extending their helping hand to contractors as well. :patriot:

I wonder what this means exactly...

There is a direct fund set up to help the local family. I believe the Brinsfield page has info:
Frank Edwin Kohler | Brinsfield Funeral Home

Railroad

Routinely Derailed
One would think that the HUGE life insurance policy would help with that. :sarcasm:

I do feel for the bereaved. But a fund does seem superfluous at first glance.

Did you read it at all? Your :sarcasm: is not appreciated.

It's a fund set up to directly assist his daughters to be able to finish college. Remember there are no longer two working household incomes in that home.

Railroad, donating to the fund is not mandatory. It is optional for those in the community who wish to make a difference in the lives of one of our families at a time of great need resulting from an uncomprehendable and tragic event.

I don't understand the desire to donate either. His point about life insurance is very valid. I guess people want to feel that they are doing something, and donating is a pretty easy way to do it.

Not everyone can afford hefty life insurance policies.

I understand that, but the victims were almost all professionals. I cannot imagine they didn't have company/government provided life insurance, plus a lot of employers pay double if it happens on the job.

There was a "handyman" there whose family probably could use the help. I'm not sure how much my pennies could help the families of the others who are getting a large insurance payment.

It's kind of like 9/11, where everyone was trying to donate in order to feel like they are doing something. Most of those victims were Wall Street types, NYPD, and NYFD. Sure there were some who left families hurting financially, but I just don't see why billions of $ were needed.
