Need Advice

My dog, Tux-the Boston, has a habit of eating anything and everything that he can find. I have seen him eat things found outside, I have seen him act like a Hoover after we finish eating, heck-he has even sampled the Swiffer wet mop residue. About 10-15 minutes after he eats whatever he can fit in his mouth, he throws it up. He can keep kibble and treats down. He just throws up what he shouldn't have eaten in the first place.

I was just wondering if there was anyone else who has had this problem or if anyone has any advice on how to stop it.

Now some background:
-He is 3 years old and started this behavior at a young age. Only recently however, past 6 months or so, has he started throwing up.

-Tux is 20 pounds and he gets fed 1.5 to 2 cups of Purina Lamb and Rice once a day. When I am home, he gets the occasional pig ear and some other small treats.

-Tux is crated while I am out of the house. He has plenty of toys to play with during the day even though he destroys them quickly and sometimes tries to eat them too. Large size Tire Biters and rope bones don't last long, to give an idea of how powerfully he chews.

-When I am home I try to keep him within visibility but the water dish is in the other room so he is out of eye shot sometimes.

I am getting very frustrated with this behavior and it is starting to make me not like him anymore. Please help!

My Lab eats anything and everything. Plastic bags (big time bag eater as they're made w/ a sugar derivative), linoleum, wood trim, mattresses, clothing, foam, fleece, stuffing, baby birds :)dead:), etc. We had to Star-proof the entire house. And when she's home alone, she stays in the kitchen and everything edible is put out of reach.

Used to have a pair of Keeshounds. We'd put them in the basement when we went to work. Came home one day to find they had eaten the sheetrock off the wall trying to get out. We coated it with everything hot and repulsive we could think of that wouldn't kill them. That was just a dressing; they ate even more sheetrock with the hot sauce. What came out the other end wasn't pretty....

It is known as Pica. It's usually a behavior issue but there can be physical reasons for it. It can be very difficult to "cure" and can be very dangerous. My daughter's Lhasa ate rocks and had to have one removed as it blocked his intestines. It was a very expensive operation. He would dig for rocks and it was very hard for her to stop him. When he was blocked for a second time, she had the surgery again but the vet tech at the office wanted the dog and had the time to work with him. He's doing very well.

Just curious...is your dog overweight? That sounds like a lot of food for a 20 lb dog. My dog weighs about 45 lbs, and eats that same amount.

Yuk...just noticed you give him pig ears. :nono:

An CG, that does sound like way too much food for the little dog.

Brewers yeast tabs or powder? Something is lacking in his diet maybe?

My labs used to eat everything too, even thier own poo, oh and cow poo was a delicacy!

My JRT had eaten a tampon once and pooped it whole, he needded help so I had to dull the string, gross but the lil guy was in pain.

Good luck and keep an eye on him, what did the vet say?

I have a 20 lb. mini-poodle mix that I give about 3/4 c. of small bites IAMS adult dog food, once a day. I also use treats to train him, and with treats he gains weight. Maybe you dog eats everything because he is too full? Sometimes I graze on food even when I'm full

I put Tux and Archer's food down at the same time but in separate bowls-both get two cups. I don't make them both eat from their own bowls since there is no history of food aggression between them and even though they both get the same food, they both want what is in the others dish. So I am just guessing at how much he actually eats. But according to the vet, he is a healthy weight.
