For whatever reason my computer went from JPG pics to some crap called hgic or something like that which I cannot read! WTF happened?

It has nothing to do with Apple, other than the fact they were the first OS vendor to adopt the STANDARD. Keyword being STANDARD. In this case a standard developed by the Motion Picture Experts Group or MPEG. There is NOTHING proprietary to Apple in this ISO standard.
