I am clueless when it comes to gardening and just have a few questions. There is an area around my house that has ugly bushes and weeds and a cat tail plant (I think). I hate it. My husband cut the cat tail all the way down to the base. Will weed killer kill it or do I have to dig it up?

Also, I was in Walmart the other day to buy weed killer and was looking at the different options. A woman approached me and told me to use vinegar and water to kill the weeds. She said it works better and will save me a lot of money. Will that really work?

How long should I wait to plant grass seeds after killing the weeds? Will grass grow this time of year or is is better to wait until fall?

TIA

If it's the plant I'm thinking of (grows tall, spiky grass with fluffy stalks) then you most likely will need to dig it up, and dispose of it, otherwise if you dig it up and toss it to the side, it can come back. Those things are very hardy.

Vinegar is a very good organic weed killer. Place it in a spray bottle with a little water and spray it on the offending plant. However, it may not work as well as an industrial weed killer in an overgrown area.

Weed kill at least twice. Mow. Rake up all clippings/debris, maybe even mow again, before sowing seed. You can sow in the spring, but I would repeat the application in the fall as well.

It depends.

If it's a beautiful expensive plant that you want to keep, and you accidentally spray it with weed killer while trying to kill dandelions ten feet away, then yes, weed killer will do the trick.

If it's an ugly crappy eyesore that you want to get rid of, you can pour a gallon of weed killer on it and it will suck it up with a straw and grow bigger and bolder.

BUT serioulsy, the way you describe the plant, IF you want to use a weed killer, I think Brush/ Poison Ivy killer will work better. That stuff will kill ANYTHING!!
