What's it 2 U
Well as I reported earlier, I adopted a dog from an animal shelter. I beleive he is a Cane Corso mix and according to the vet he is no more than 2 yrs old. He is very mouthy when he plays, but never bites. I have only had him a little over a week and unfortunately, he has run out of the house on a couple of occassions when my 4 yo son (who I am also having to train LOL) left the door cracked.

On Monday I came home from work and right after my daughter let him out of his crate, he ran out the door my son left open. We all immediately gave chase. I told my kids and the neighborhood kids not to chase because he thinks they are playing with him. He ran through two yards and then spotted a man with his golden retriever in the back yard and ran over there. According to the kids, before I got back there the dogs were just sniffing each other. The Golden then barked and put his paw on my dogs face and a tussle ensued. The kids said it looked like rough play, but that neither dog was biting. When I got back there, the other owner was taking his dog up on his back deck and my dog ran toward his dog, but run kinda under his belly. He was not growling, showing teeth or had his hair raised. I immediately grabbed my dog and he laid submissively on his side. All this lasted about 1 minute from the time he got out. I also have a dog next door that is in a dog lot and when I take my dog out, the dog barks. My dog will acknowledge him by looking, but never barks back or charges toward him. The neighbor was upset and called the police and accused me of having a vicious dog and says that he is goign to file charges and tell our HOA that I need to get rid of "that pitbull" that attacked him and his dog. My dog loves all the kids in our neighborhood and has never so much as barked at anyone that has come to my house.

Should I be concerned? My thoughts were that he was just recently neutered when I adopted him, so he still has a heavy dose of testosterone running thru him. I wasn't sure how he was with dogs as my shelter says they no longer animal test. My intent was to do some training with him and have him bond more with me and my family and then introduce him to other dogs later. Am I doing the right thing? Do any of you rescuer's think my dog may be dog aggressive.

I also took him to Petsmart when we got him and he didn't get aggressive with the couple dogs he came into contact with, but he did play hard with an excited puppy, so I removed him and when I did, he peed on the floor. He has never had an accident in my house, so I thought this might be a sign of dominance, not necessarily aggression. Any help is appreciated.

Do you have a fenced yard? I suppose I'd have been upset if I was your neighbor.

On the other hand, people mistake my Boxers for Pitts. People are ignorant of dog breeds, especially the bully breeds. My neighbor (who doesn't like dogs) has told me my dogs are vicious because they bark at him when he's cutting the grass (they're in their fenced yard). So, I don't necessarily think your dog is a problem.

You can never know how your dog will respond to another dog at all times and certainly not when another dog "threatens" it.

It is YOUR responsibility to contain your dog. Don't blame a four year old child for letting the dog out of the door. You need make certain that doesn't happen. You have adopted a breed that is "suspect" no matter how wonderful the dog is and you need to be extremely careful and diligent with the care and socialization of that dog.

I'd get him into a training class ASAP with an experienced trainer and let them evaluate him. Could be he just needs a firm hand and consistent handling. He's probably never had either.

Your neighbor could turn out to be a PITA so taking your pup to classes would be a good idea even more so. Do you have a dog park or something local where he could spend more time with other dogs?

Catt - I agree that my neighbor had a right to be upset and I apologized for the situation more than once. But, I think he is over exaggerating the situation also. I am in no way blaming my 4 yo - I am just stating that after only having a dog for 7 days he doesn't understand the concept of shutting a door and at the time he was let out of his crate we did not know the door was open.

Training is something I plan on doing, as well.

Yes, we have several dog parks and I did plan to take him there, but wanted to take him to training and have him with us a little more than 7 days before I took him there.

Thank to everyone for all the tips.

I would start training the dog to stay away from the doors unless he is invited through them. You can use a broom or some other marker and make him stay behind that marker. Eventually he'll learn the area to stay behind. This isn't an immediate solution though.

And I understand why your neighbor was upset. I was walking my dog when a neighbor's very scary looking dog ran up to us. Luckily nothing happened, but it really scared me.

You may want to go over to your neighbor again and explain the situation. Maybe your neighbor didn't understand and if he was worked up, he may not have heard you.

You are right to give him some settling time first before taking him to a park. Good luck, it should all work out.
